Happened to me. Basically you try to delay the offer or extend the deadline for 2nd choice. Then you inform your 1st choice of your timeline but you really want to pursue their opportunity. If 1st choice wants you, they'll expedite. Careful on delaying 2nd choice too much. Go where you're wanted.
Definitely not pushy. Companies have seen this before. If you're a top candidate, the hiring manager will make sure whatever remaining rounds get done ASAP. If their answer to you is something like "well we're still looking at other candidates" or "we're unsure of our timeline right now," then you're not a top choice.
Best of luck! I'm sure it'll work out.
Agree with everyone here. I have done it a few times. I have gotten one offer from job 2. Then immediately tell the other job (job 1) that I have an outstanding offer but that I am more interested in working at job 1. I can normally get an interview the next day or get the process moved along faster. But it also works the other way. One time, I received one job offer and then I immediately call the other job and revoke my application. It’s all about being honest and showing respect. Don’t waste their time and they will appreciate it.
Do you have a deadline to accept the offer?
Next Friday. Don’t know when I’ll get an update from the other firm.
I treat interviews, offers, etc like a relationship. If I see red flags in the hiring process then I don’t accept. Example: one firm took 3 months to give me an offer. I declined because I don’t have time for that kind of fuckery. If first choice is jerking you around then move on.
Agree. It’s only been a couple days though.
I texted my recruiter and asked her if there was any way to speed up the offer since another company had offered me a position, but really wanted to work at [better company]. I had an unofficial verbal offer the next day, and a written offer the following morning (texted on Tuesday, written offer on Thursday morning). Initially they expected to make an offer early the following week, but the other company wanted an answer ASAP.
My first choice ended up paying a $12k higher salary. The work is more interesting, I have better upward mobility, and I like the team a lot better.
I’d recommend letting your contact at the first choice know and see what they can do, just emphasize that you really prefer them over your offer in-hand.
