I think first you need to figure out what you want. I know it’s a trite question but it really makes you level with yourself instead of jus chasing the next passing thing. I applied and interviewed for so many jobs I didn’t want until I found the one I actually wanted. And it came through in my interviews and in my work and it all makes sense now that I’m happy. Sounds lame but it’s eerily similar to dating. What I wanted was to get out of agency life and find a way to pivot that was more long term and would allow me a healthy life balance. I could give two shites about awards. And it was always the case. Just needed to admit it to myself.
Sure thing. I now come up with ideas to help brands put their campaigns on a specific tech platform. Not quite as creative a role as I’m used to but still considered “creative” here and the difference in culture is night and day from agency life. Most are happy to be here, the days are much busier but the office is empty by 5:30 and the pay is pretty much the same, but with added equity.
All of the above.
But first, ask yourself if you really want to stay in this dying industry.
I did the same as CD1. Looked outside the agency into tech. Got creative with who I reached out to and sifted out the agency gigs. Much happier as I have a kid and one on the way. Out by 4 everyday, flex WFH, took a bit of a pay cut and not as creative as agency but I have equity in the direction of the company as opposed to just my team or account
Tech is broad which is why it’s so rich with opps and they’re looking for agency talent. Yes to big tech but also smaller/midsize ad tech companies (think companies that productize ad formats and niche digital functionalities).
I’m currently in method-less madness – how else do you find a four-leaf clover? It can be defeating, but I just remind myself that with even the most unlikely avenues, ‘you never know’.
