How's ohare looking today?
I've worked at the same engineering firm for 4 years. I'm currently making $161k with only a $750 bonus, but excellent vacation (4 weeks, cash out anytime, rolls over indefinitely), 45 hours a week. I have an interview with a recruiter at Guidehouse this week for a Technical Project Manager role. It seems to be focused in the government space and requires a security clearance. What sort of salary and benefits could I expect for this sort of role at Guidehouse?

In my experience my pay has risen at a greater pace in industry, I do find consulting felt “younger” and I miss that sometimes, but I’ll live with it for more money.

Would say this is true for average performers, high performers with a strong network can make more in industry. Just don’t hear about it as often as the sample size is smaller.
Constant travel is a no go for me. I recently had a kid and that changes my perspective on being away from family. Covid remote work delayed the inevitable jump to industry for me.
The ability to scale and solve problems in the same place. Being able to solve new challenges or pivot when original strategy didn’t work or dealing with scaling challenges is something I didn’t get from consulting. Depth of work excites me more nowadays than breadth of work.
Also one thing I didn’t realize when I left was the idea of really dealing with “one boss” on your side was refreshing (at least for B2C). In consulting, having to deal with clients as bosses and your own team with the project leads and partners is all draining and anxiety inducing all the time. The deadlines are less frequent and you have much longer time horizons to work from (obviously depending on what type of company you join).
So no I wouldn’t.
Moved to industry 3 years ago at first year SM, tripled income since leaving. I would not move back at this time. I get to build things and experience the client side of change, which I like more. I also like this job market because I am able to still hop around for a nice pay increase when I’m done completing the objectives I set out at employment. Once the job market calms down, I don’t know, I might change my mind and look at consulting again for a longer duration, and probably same company. I don’t ever regret leaving for industry experience. It’ll be helpful longer term no matter where I end up.
