If you live in a state that has WEP and GPO and you have your 40 quarters you may want to contact your congressmen. The social security fairness act is being voted on next month. Even if you don’t have your own ss, but are married, this will affect survivor benefits. I am not a fan of asking the government for anything free., I have earned this and should get it. I have met full retirement age and can get the ss that I earned. I have started taking it because it reduces to 1/3 in retirement

What I don't understand is that individuals who have never worked or qualified, but are married can claim their spouse's benefits, but teachers who have qualified get penalized. What kind of archaic system is this? It seems like if you pay in you should be able to get something out, and if you don't pay in you don't get a payout unless a spouse passes.

We are lucky in Texas that our retirement is a separate entity and can’t be used for other purposes.

They’re terrified that teachers will get a “windfall” at retirement. Like SS is the lotto

likefunny

With the repeal of ss act it would also help, firemen, police officers, rail roaders and teachers.

like

Exactly! The government decides to use a pension & then penalizes people who also pay into SS.

First they aren't paid enough, so they get a second job. Then they can't get what they were forced to pay for.

It seems to me, if you can't collect, you should be able to opt out of paying SS...

Thanks to both Texas for bringing up this issue and Missouri for clarification. I am going to look more into this and see where we fit in. Living in a state where we pay to get on the beaches, and a past governor who changed our teachers retirement structure, I am sure that the state will have some way to make teachers pay more when we are facing retirement.

like

Yes, all teachers need to write their congressman regarding this issue as it is the first time this issue has made it to the floor for a vote. HR 82 would repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO) that reduce earned Social Security benefits. The WEP reduces the Social Security earned benefit by up to 50%. The GPO reduces, and frequently eliminates, the spousal benefit paid for by the Social Security earner. The companion bill for the Senate is S 1302

like

Just to be clear, your state needs both WEP and GPO to qualify?

I am not sure what 40 Quarters is. Can you please explain?

One quarter is 1/4 of a year or three months. So, 40 quarters would be 10 years. They don't have to be consecutive.

Thank you for this! I will look into it. CT is a state that precludes teachers from collecting full ss benefits. We can only get 40% of whatever the full monthly benefit would be!

Yes, pensions are decent if you work your whole career as a teacher but for those of us who have worked other careers before switching to the schools, our pensions can be minimal. When the social security we earned in previous careers is then capped at 20-40% depending on the state you live in, your retirement can be significantly impacted. We have a right to the social security we earned and should not be penalized for switching to a career in the schools.

Thanks Missouri, I appreciate it. I thought that Texas was talking about taxes that they pay to their state. We pay taxes quarterly one year at a time, because they increase each year. We pay about 2,500, per quarter in state taxes each year, so this is why this post caught my eye. I wasn’t sure if Texas was referring to the amount we pay out or take in. That’s why I was confused. On the NEA website there is only a small blurb that mentions two pieces of legislation. Quoting NEA.org-“The Social Security Fairness Act and the Social Security 2021 Act -would fully repeal GPO and WEP that together deprive more than 2.5 million dedicated public servants, including many educators of social security benefits they have earned. “. I am going to check my pay and see if we have both. I am also wondering if I should have gotten something back when I passed the 10 year mark. Does it double when you have worked for over twenty years? Does this relief only take place once you retire?

Nothing doubles. You are just eligible for benefits.

WEP is a different formula to figure as if you have another pension plan. GPO is a formula that is figured for spouses benfits that paid into a non ss plan.

This may help:

My teacher (PSRS) husband has always worked a second job (SS). He just retired & will see zero from SS. I won't qualify for any of hiss SS, either.

He paid his whole life, longer than teaching. I have several quarters myself, but I doubt it's 40.

He should at least get enough to pay his part B Medicare...

I'm still teaching, so it costs less to cover him on my insurance.

MMS1 if he is full retirement age he should get some but not much.

If he is 65 he has not met it. Google and you can find his full retirement age. If you live in one of the 14 states that ss is not taken out of teachers check he will still get something if he has 40 quarters and met full retirement age. I bet his is 66 and 6 months.

How does your school district ensure that you get paid for trainings? Do you ever get shorted money in your supplemental paycheck? If so, how long does it take your district to fix the issue?

Our district can’t seem to pay teachers correctly for extra duty and trainings and puts it on the teacher to seek out the person who authorizes payment, rather than seeking out answers themselves, therefore sometimes teachers just throw up their hands, instead of engaging for that additional pay.
