If you plan to leave your firm and your manager asks you why you're leaving, what do you say? I have a legitimate non-bridge-burning reason unrelated to comp or simply "big tech is better" reason. I have asked for more client facing exposure and haven't gotten it cause weird reasons, which was the factor that caused me to look for exits in the first place. But I'm not sure if I should bring this up. Should I just be vague and say "looking for a new chapter"?

“Looking for a new chapter”. There is no scenario where airing your grievances, no matter how slight they are or politely you say them, will help you. It’s not your job to fix your old employer.

D1 - that's a very kind view of people on the receiving end of a resignation. In my experience that's not how it works. pre-Accenture, I once found out about some structural changes in the works. So I found a new job and left and when I was honest they denied the changes were coming. Later I was forwarded a chain of emails from the PPMDs criticizing my "hypothesis" which they then carried out a few months later and screwed my old peers. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Be polite but truthful. Firms really do need accurate exit information in order to improve. Also, limit your list to the top three; don’t inundate them.

like

Keep it warmly vague and gracefully exit

The other factor is that I do want to maintain a good relationship with this individual because the sector we serve is small and I want to work with the client I've been serving. So a good word from my SM/M might be valuable if I run into the client again. And I think showing that I'm driven by professional growth, not just $$, might help. But idk

If money was a factor, mention the money. It is ok to take an opportunity that offers growth AND salary. Being honest about that will maintain the relationship and provide the information needed for your old firm to remain (or have a chance to remain) competitive

Worst case scenario, you can always say "personal reasons," "wanting a change of pace", something like that. To the point above, honest feedback can help improve things, but it's really up to you.

I think that’s fine to voice - you are looking for x experience and didn’t get it. I think you should be less vague. Be honest, not hurtful is my philosophy.

Make it about you and your individual needs and decisions. I never give any criticism other than the vague things about ”I'm not able to get what I need here” you're not going to get anyone's bad behavior fixed or leadership's deficient approach resolved with your exit feedback and you want to remain eligible for rehire.

like

Just say it was a tough decision but you couldn’t pas up this opportunity. No reason to say anything else

“To get away from you!”

Think this is the weakest argument I heard for someone to leave a job, you have no clue what the situation will be on the new job, you know basically only 2 things, your new pay and reasons why you are considering new opportunities, not getting the client facing time is so vague I feel there's far more to the story.

There are more details. DM'd you.

From my perspective, no one is really surprised when people leave for a big tech offer. You can chalk it up to a new chapter / challenge, great opportunity, dream job, etc. If you want to share details about things you were unhappy with I’d personally reserve that for your HR exit interview. I was honest in my original exit interview with things that I didn’t feel were right and called out specific higher ups and still was able to boomerang back to the firm with higher pay. Then I left to tech a year later and everyone understood.
