If you switch jobs and rollover your 401k, do you have to sell all your shares in order to cash out and transfer it? What if you are in the negative?

Depending on how you rollover, you can usually transfer “in kind” which allows you to hold your current positions and move them. It shouldn’t trigger any tax consequences.

SM1, I think he means his portfolio went down comparing to what was invested, so he doesn’t want to sell and realize.

Yes M1 is correct D1’s - Thanks for the helpful info!

You won’t need to sell, providers should be able to swap your positions

How can you be in the negative in a 401k? I don't understand.

New to investing, but want to make sure I'm doing this correctly. I've maxed out my 401K and am looking to open an IRA. I know everyone recommends backdooring this into a Roth IRA, but if my plan is to move/retire to a state with no state income tax, wouldn't traditional make more sense? Or am I overthinking this? Also, if I go the backdoor route, how do I make sure I don't get taxed again, when i convert to a Roth? Thanks in advance!
