When I was younger putting myself in a prospective employer’s shows, I always thought “no way would I hire someone who got fired from a previous job.” But now having worked with several people who have gotten fired, I would for sure be able to look past it. Frankly I’d be happy to have some of my involuntarily terminated former colleagues on my team right now. Sometimes a person just isn’t right for a specific role within a specific group at a specific time. It’s not the permanent negative mark that I once thought it was.

I am in CA and was laid off and my employer disclosed that. Is this law just for firing? At the end of the day is there a difference between firing not for cause and a layoff?

Whether you say you were fired or that there was a RIF, keep it positive. Let your experience and personality shine through. Good luck!

I am in the same boat and not disclosing anything like that on the calls. If you read online, both types of views will be there. It’s upto you but say if you are hiring someone and person says I got laid off etc., how would you feel of the candidate? It is not easy to get this information out of the background check and I would play with some amount of luck here. Be prepared for all sorts of questions. Good luck!

Thanks! Really gotta try luck!

In the UK, they (used to?) refer to someone as being "sacked" for when someone was handed their tools in a sack and told to leave. They were "fired" if their sack of tools was set on fire so they couldn't ply their trade elsewhere. Getting fired was much much worse than getting sacked. If it was timing, money, fit, etc. just be willing to admit/accept that. It happens to even good people. Don't bring it up if they don't, but definitely don't lie. "It wasn't a good fit" covers a lot of things. You were competitive in a collaborative environment (or vice versa). They needed someone with five years experience, and you had two (or vice versa). They moved a lot of work offshore for cost savings, etc. Shit happens. If you were fired for stealing, getting into fights, etc., that's something else.

Yes it pops in a background check. You should not lie about it. I was laid off and when they asked me why I wanted to leave I had other reasons because I had already been looking. When asked directly I didn’t lie. You could have the job and then lose it for lying. I believe it’s also illegal to lie on a job application if that’s a question on there. It was on mine and came out in the background check.

Does anyone know of where to find remote part time work opportunities for older Indian women? My mom was a part-time after school teacher but has not been doing that due to covid (dad is high risk). I’m having her do some online typing lessons to get her to be a faster typer, maybe find her a data entry gig. She does not want to do nanny’ing / babysitting. She’s a great teacher though and she’s trilingual (Telugu, hindi) - anyone know of where to find opportunities?

Hey everyone, so my sister and her boyfriend have both gained about 60-70 pounds since COVID started. I’m getting very concerned for them and I’ve seen firsthand how they’re developed awful eating and drinking habits and they hardly ever exercise.
