If you were offered 50% of your compensation and full benefits to take a 6-12 month ‘break’ from your job would you take it? Because that may be coming to you very soon.

I would sign up in a heartbeat. And then I’d go volunteer and do something productive societally. For better or worse we’re all doing this dance to hold on to our jobs, most of us have 0 mindshare on the work stuff.

Yep. The firm I was at did this in 2008- a month off unpaid but the reduction was split over the year, or work 4 days week for a year. So 20% reduction in everyone’s salary for a year and you got to choose. Most people took the month. It was great. No one got laid off.

And if you don’t take it?

Absolutely. I work in cyber as an experienced engineer, so I’d hope to have a new role within the first 2-3 months. I couldn’t imagine the same if was in audit or even the GRC side of cyber.

@EY1 - we may be in the same group. Let me know if DM is better - I have been slightly anxious and would love to have your confidence in the cyber industry! 😊

So many questions about details - Would there be any restrictions to working/volunteering elsewhere while “out” and/or what conditions would we be agreeing to upon coming back to work? Would the return date be mutually agreed upon in the timeframe or would we just be “summoned” back to work when needed? Would we need to promise a certain amount of time upon our return, what would the penalty be, etc. I’d love to try out something new as a volunteer but before a firm were to offer something like this I’d expect all of these details to be clearly laid out

@OP I am not prepared for 50% salary and this post coming from a Principal I am little worried now. You are saying may be coming soon? What is the probability of this happening? Do you know if leadership is already thinking about it?

Yes. However that is a very generous furlough.

Didn’t deloitte take a similar approach during the Great Recession? Offset layoffs by lowering everyone’s compensation which proved to be a really bad decision.

They did. I was asked to take a nearly 11% paycut. Went to grad school instead. Bad bad move for them. I came back in 2014 at higher than I could have been if I stayed. And nearly everyone I knew from 08 that I thought was smart was gone

Sure I would. But this is probably not how this works. ‚Generous‘ offers of unpaid leaves are much more likely, if shit hits the consulting fan.

Yes, assuming the ‘break’ is just a break and not lay-off.

If 50% pay is my severance and I get benefits for 12 months then i would take it.

i would take it even with zero pay...badly need a break...

I’ve already did this at 80% and achieved a Masters degree in the process. 50% but keep benefits? Absolutely. The other 50% of my time would be rearranging life to a new normal... maybe “use the degree”????

My student teacher sometimes wears inappropriate clothes to work with high school students. For example, last week she wore a sheer blouse where you could see her bra in the back (not in the front, thank goodness). Admin hasn't said anything to her about it, but I notice the looks the male students give her. What should I say?
