If you were to scout potential new hires for the Big 4, what qualities would you seek when scouting them? Like in the NFL, quarterbacks are judged on physical traits and arm strength.

Interesting question. I used to talk about this with an older partner. I think it’s interesting because your future leaders are going to come from your staff 1 class (12-15 years later) so you want the best of the best but then in reality what staff are doing their first 3-5 years of their career is very monotonous and not something you need the best students for - and indeed best students wouldn’t do this work anyway. So that being said always blows me away when sit in interview de briefs and people jizz their pants about a 4.0. All that being said I think first skill is ability to work in a team. Your going to spend 70 hours per week in a room with folks and if you are arrogant or what not it won’t work out. Other traits I’d say are problem solving, organizational ability, writing ability, and endurance

Honestly I'd go for kids with more life experience. The people I've seen struggle most are the kids still living at home starting their first ever job at age 22. They don't have perspective on anything and tend to burn out fast.

The kid who worked since age 14 and wants to work their way up in the world will almost always be a better worker.

Although I️ wouldn’t draw the correlation between living at home and life experience

GPA is important to weed out some of the weaker candidates, but not necessarily a 4.0. New hires who have never failed at anything (gotten less than perfect grades) don't adapt quite as well and don't respond well to any review notes. After GPA, I go for communication skills and personality. Did I have to drag a conversation out of them? If so, they probably won't do well in front of a client.

^^ so true and would be my real answer as well

They aren't mutually exclusive but the kids who have little life experience typically live at home. Living at home doesn't mean no life experience.

I think that you need people with that intangible thing that they just kind of get it. If that makes sense at all. You want driven, hard working, coach able ,great attitude and smart people and that can come from a lot of different backgrounds.

Attention to detail. Give them a couple of word problems to choose from that make it easy for them to trip up.
