the people...corny but it’s true

Not corny! The people you work with can make or break a job

I can work from home or office whenever I want. I don’t have to start my day early or end at a certain hour. I have a decent amount of autonomy on my cases. Boss and coworkers are genuinely nice people. My cases are interesting to me, even the challenges are sometimes fun. I don’t have a strict billing goal. Boss said goal is to produce high quality work and just keep clients happy.

In order, mentors/champions, general office/firm culture, practice area I like, clients I like, right amount of intellectual challenge, compensation and prestige.

Of course some days I don't love my job so much... 😁

Partners that respect my work/home life balance. I just hit the 6 month mark at this firm and despite being “new” I have so much independence in terms of when I get my work done and when I can take time off so long as I meet my billable target

like

The feeling that clients actually appreciate my contributions. At my last firm, the institutional clients I worked for regularly 1) made unreasonable demands at the 11th hour, leading to my working multiple all-nighters through my fifth year and always playing catch-up, and 2) blamed us for delays or confusion that came directly from them. It’s also nice not being instructed to travel to hotspots for sectarian violence to satisfy the client’s preference that counsel conduct in-person interviews.

I work for myself. I am the master of my destiny, I picked the cases I want to take, and I rise and fall of my own skills

Autonomy

like

Respect for work life balance. Partners don’t create emergencies or give unreasonable deadlines. Partners are organized and available to assist or provide guidance when needed. Coworkers are not a “family” (aka toxic) but they are respectful.

Slightly less than a year into audit and know forensics is where I want to be. Is it worth it to stick it out a few more busy seasons or should I try to get into forensics now? I don’t want to look back and wish I’d stuck it out in audit if it would be better for my career, but am also excited at the concept of getting into forensics sooner rather than later.

I’ve seen posts about what to get/whether to get partners holiday gifts in the firm environment but what about the in-house world? Am I supposed to get my boss a gift?
