If you working with a micro management style ux lead who want to micro manage all the work you are doing, he wants you do a lot extra work you disagree with, he wants to see all as much as explorations even you knew the results when you run out time for the sprint. Example you know few ideas are not good suggestion but he wants to see by his eyes then for the same result, no trust. End of sprint he jumped in and throw more work for you that you not aware from beginning, how you handled it?

I tried to connect with this lead and I find out he is not a person welcome open honest conversation and he is super insecure. For example: I asked him feedback and he avoid look at my eyes , looks around and trying to avoid look at me.

I joined this new team few months ago, really frustrated for the team leaders, and maybe I have the wrong feeling that he trying to give hard time to me because few months ago we had 1:1, I was open and gave him some honest feedback and it may hurts his feeling then he report to the director says I don’t have the ability to deliver the work even tho the reason why we weren’t delivering anything that sprint because business partner decided we are not ready. Because I disagree the ux lead to do a lot work when we knew the team, devs also are not ready and we are not able to get confirmation for that sprint. He asked me do explore for little button as example without consider what need be done and what’s in the scope and what results we looking for. I disagree with the work for sake of work without any strategy and priorities.

I think Work hard is important and valuable for any contributor, but work smart also need happen before work hard.

Anyone of you would share some your perspective if this is me not good or professional, or he just trying give me hard time?

Extra example:
After team assigned me a project in that sprint, we follow Agile method, I tried to understand who, what, why, how, when. Then tried to understand what is the scope and key results we looking for. After that I start the work with my cohort, the lead will jump in and throw snow balls and not considering it will affect it will depend the scope or we need expend the due date to able to make all that happen, also he check my the design, components even we know it’s not final hand off, only for check concept, only one button he wants to see all different layout even as designer we know some ideas are not worth to mock up, there also lack of communication or not clear communication, me and him not fight outside instead throwing me on the bus multiple times in front of team without give me a heads up.

Report me to director without try to communicate ahead in 1:1, just watching me fail and report it.

I thought teammates are you can count on and you can trust and be open, but he taught me how to be a fake person and how to zip my mouth and feel anxious to watch my back because he may stab me behind anytime.

I’m not used to a team lead this style who take designers credits to himself and black mail me. I guess this is new course of any person’s career can not avoid. The upsetting part is the director never tried to talk with me and directly send an email with hard tone to tell me and my UX manager he gots negative feedback and that’s not good. He 100% trust what he heard from one party without listen another party with passive aggressive hard way to communicate and he decided I’m guilty, so I wasn’t try to talk with him, because I knew no matter what I say or show, he trust his own judgment.

After I received that email, I was shocked! But I tried to stay calm and be professional, I replied director I will reach the ux lead yo understand what happened and willing to listen and adjust myself. Then I set 1:1 with the ux lead, I can feel he was nervous and avoid to have any eye contacts in the meeting. But I tried be positive and trying yo build a healthy relationships even tho we had a crappy start. I laughed at it and telling him the first time to work with new teammates, I expect there will have a learning curve, so I’m open and willing to hear his suggestions or feedback, then he gave me a list of feedback, some I agreed I can improve and will work on that. But after that meeting it seems like the intense feeling between us not getting any better. (Maybe he did change but I’m not recognize it yet, I’m still struggling without with him today.)

Rest the team are also new members, no body are trying to get into trouble, including ux managers. I feel I’m alone, have no power. Maybe this is what this team looking for a designer who take Order, do the work, no disagreement allowed. When I doing something good there is no compliments, when I said some idea or suggestions trying to improve the teamwork, it ends to hard correction.

Any of you ever experienced anything like this? And how you navigate out of it? I’m not sure how to work in this team culture anymore. I’m sucks? I started self doubts and feeling lost. Please help. I can not avoid to work with him, or skip him, this is a big pain to me. I’m willing to build a good relationship with him, but the reality told me he is my boss, he do whatever he wants, do whatever he asked even tho I think this is not a smart efficient approach that also have a timeline, priorities, scope control for each projects. I’m really in pain daily.


Leave, get out, I’ve been stuck in the same position for years, and people only see the act the manager/director puts on. Leave and find something better. If you aren’t being uplifted or guided in your career it’s not worth staying.


I wish! I started hunt for job since this year March, but the market is crazy. Not a lot good company or team are hiring, either went through interview then they are in hire freeze or the hire process is insanely long, such as interview one role took me 5~8 interviews and each interview took 45mins to2 hrs. And they are extremely picky, such as Spotify, indeed.

One of the company I interviewed, the recruiter told me they think I’m not senior, but the hire manager told me in great and skilled, experienced senior designer, but not fit their team. Few company gave a offer but I rejected. Still looking.

Everyday is a pain, teammate are all only thinking about how to make themselves looks good than you, no much empathy and support each other, leadership are don’t care contributor are doing but only listen ux lead voices. This team is really hierarchical not flat communication style. I really want to get out, but the market is not do me any favor.

Please reference me or let me know if there are any good opportunities. The thought of wake up go to work, gives me anxious at night not able to sleep. Idk how long I can handle this.

Uncontrolled growth of a project is called “project creep” or “scope creep” and you should bring this up to your coworkers and boss to strategize your project management. Keep criticism constructive always. Set milestones and have a clear vision for the end. It is very important.


I know this may be the only solution if I stay here.

The most challenging part isn’t the project itself, work/projects in fact are easy from my perspective, problem is the people makes things more complicated than it is. I had plan about how to work projects, but the ux lead jump in without be transparent and mess it around left me feel exhausted. Idk why it should turn out that/his way. I think night struggling is I don’t understand his strategy and why he do certain thing. Maybe I’m not senior enough to understand this ux lead leadership management talent.

I think I need to learn how to act/speak like “them”. Sometime the thoughts of “make things done in time, decent quality via agile way” makes me in trouble. I can not control the people, I see the potential way I can do it more efficiently, better outcome way with consider the time, budget and capabilities without make people life in hell, that’s why I have a lot disagreement with the ux lead. I’m still on the way to be a leader in the future, I learned what not to do/be from this team and the leader managers. Good lesson to learn before I turn into be like them. It only helps me be a better leader in the future.

Currently feeling struggling how to survive in this team and this economy job market .
