You can get a portable washer and dryer, if you have the storage space. The appliances are on wheels. The washer hooks up to the sink with a hose and the dryer uses a regular outlet. You don't need a dedicated electrical line.
I believe each building/co-op has its own rules. Depending the structure of your rental ownership you’d likely need permission from both the owner and the building. There are other complexities as well such as water hookups and electricity in the spot you’d set it up.
I asked my management company if I could. My washing machine (combos are massively hit with supply chain issues) is being delivered Thursday and will be installed where the current dishwasher is. It uses the same plumbing; the building’s plumber is installing it and putting the dishwasher in storage. No dryer though due to space and where the electric is located — I’ll just send out my towels and sheets. Can live without for the rest. FWIW, this is also a rental. I don’t own my place.

Depends on the building.

Need plumbing and the right electrical box/wattage

For large buildings (not necessarily for walk-ups), there's almost always a laundry room somewhere in the building for all tenants to use.

I really don’t think that would work given the layout/structure of the unit.
If you have to go with an apartment without the wash/dry in unit, make sure there’s a reliable laundromat nearby.

Put it this way, you aren’t the only genius out there. If there was a possibility of having in unit W/D, it would have been there already - as that would have increased the monthly rent significantly

Here ya go. Tell me how it works 😄

I used to have a portable washer that would attach to the kitchen sink and I would wheel it in and out of a closet.
If your apartment has rules against installing washers and dryers, you can probably still get away with this as long as nobody sees you bringing it in to the building.
If you have the closet space to hide it, it's great. And then I also had a portable dryer but you don't really need one. You can just use racks to hang things dry.
"You can just use racks to hang things dry."
Which sure is a lot cheaper (and more environmentally friendly) than running a dryer anyway
