If your firm follows the Cravath scale, do you think you’ll receive a raise at the end of the year commensurate with your advancing a year? (Eg if you’re a 1st year in NY, do you think you’ll get that 10k bump as you move to your second year in 2021?)

Too soon to tell. Check back in December. And don’t ask your partners, who probably had their pay reduced substantially sometime in the last few months. The aren’t in a mood to discuss associate compensation issues.

Don’t mean to alarm you but if “this” lasts awhile and especially if it gets worse like Dr. Fauci testifies this morning, anything is possible. The COVID news is mind blowing. A mutation has appeared that’s 10 times more infectious than the original strain, and it’s now the dominant strain in the world. Fauci says that if current trends continue the US may soon see 100,000 new cases per day. The currently overall mortality rate is roughly 4.8%. Halve that and apply it to 100,000 cases per day and you’re talking about 2400 people dying of Covid per day. By way of reference the current number 1 killer in the US is heart disease, which kills about 1800 people per day. Covid may soon surpass that by 33%. If we get anywhere close to those outcomes things will be very bad for a very long time. Sorry to be Debbie Downer but it’s important for us all to be clear eyed about what we’re dealing with so we can plan.

So, respectfully, how do you calculate the death rate, understanding that both my numerator and my denominator are imperfect? That is we don’t know how many people have died from COvID because many people who have died, especially early and especially in less developed areas, weren’t tested. And as you point out there is some unknown number of people who have become infected but not been tested either for disease or antibodies.

Jeeze, I’ve been assuming this whole time of course it’ll go up but it’s bonuses that will be the question....now I’m even more concerned

Ladies who have been promoted to a manager role, what would you say is the greatest different between it and your time as a consultant/senior consultant? I know this varies slightly between firms but I’m considering going for a manager promotion down the line but want to make sure I’m comfortable with what will be expected of me (and see what I need to work on to be successful).

Has an offer to join a smaller but growing firm. Will get a decent raise, but I'm concerned about the lack of delivery capability. Seems like the expectation is they want you to be able to do it all, and they brand and technical breadth is not as established. Looks to me its high risk and the reward is just the raise they offer. Anyone has similar experience can share their experience?

When your partner puts time on your calendar for a one on one next week with zero context…it is promotion season but I’ll surely be overthinking this for the next week! 😬😬

I’m heartbroken - it feels like a loss beyond my control. How should I overcome this? We are both 32yo if that helps.

Let’s pretend we’re holding companies. I’ll start: No, we can’t hire an extra writer even though you’re clocking 70+ hours a week. BTW, our contract with your client caps billable hours per employee because they know we don’t pay overtime. Here’s a non-billable code you should start using for the rest of the year.

Is it normal to get basically zero feedback? Brand new associate working at a mid sized firm. Been there a few months now and firm is still WFH. I get a fairly consistent amount of work. But I send my work product off into the ether and typically hear nothing or very little back (even when I follow up). I’ve gotten same vague “good work” feedback but that’s about it. I’ve drafted memos to clients and some briefs that have been sent/submitted nearly verbatim, so I assume that’s a good sign.
