If you’re making $200k+, what’s the most you’d spend on an apt? Do you still live below your means (<$3k apt) or upgrade to a more luxurious building ($3k+)?

I’ve been living in the same 1br for 4 years under $2800 and with my wife 2 of those years. The extra savings adds up pretty quickly...1k saved per month x 12 x 4 = 48k

I love Fort Greene! I over $200k and spend less than $2300 on my place.

Assuming your lifestyle needs are being met (ie, you’re not cramming into a smaller or less functional space than you need to keep rent low), definitely avoid lifestyle creep. Pick a non-rent goal and dump the money saved in there

Lifestyle creep is so real!!! My bf got an upgrade on a flight ONE time and now refuses to fly economy 😑

Switched to $4k a month a few years back and couldn't be happier. Especially now giving the situation.

SO and I have a combined TC of around $400k, but pay $3,250 for our 1-bed, mostly so we can be super aggressive with paying down our student loans. We should be done with those (started with about $350k combined) by the end of March, but will probably stay in our place for at least another year or two and start saving up to buy a place.

<3k in order to save for 3M house hopefully

I could not personally be OK paying more than $3500 but my attitude towards finances is reducing fixed costs as much as possible so that other aspects of my life (going out to eat, vacations, personal possessions) can be nicer. But it's all preference!

As much as you can afford and feel comfortable both financially and physically, after proper saving goal.

Upgrade!! So worth it. Especially during WFH. This is your life
Also tbh I’m not interested in having a huge savings for retirement. I’m young and can enjoy life way more now so YOLO

I make less than $200k and pay $3650 in a luxury 1 bed by myself. 100% worth it.

I can’t decide this. Our lease is up soon (combined $300k) and we are in a $3k place which I do love and we are saving like mad, but having one more room would be brilliant.

like

This is hard to say without context of city. 3K gets you a lot more in some places

like

I would definitely upgrade in that case! Those changes are actually pretty meaningful and worth it IMO

Lived in a gut reno 1bd walk-up in Manhattan for $2,525 when I left, $2,400 when I moved in 3 years prior by myself as a new associate. Place was decently big and very nice but a 6th flr walk-up. My (now) fiancé moved in with me shortly after I did and we almost lost it mentally after 6 weeks in April post-COVID due to lack of space. Went to the beach in a large 5k sf house for 6 mths then moved back to the city to Williamsburg in a dope 1bd condo that is ~300sf larger and we are so SO happy!

Yeah I think it’s an ideal neighborhood. I work in CRE and we were slightly down last year but total combined income was a bit over $400k and rent is $3,575 but just under 900sf

I make more than $200k and I’m still paying less than 3k, but I’ve been considering upgrading to a place that’s more than 3k when my lease is up.

I make over 200k and I live with roommates, paying $1020/month for rent. I would not even consider spending $3000 a month on rent

Why are people so angry about their age? I’m the youngest on my team (24) & w the exception of one person that’s 25, everyone else on the team are parents in their late 30s - late 40s. I don’t have much in common w them, & any time age is brought up, everyone quickly gets offended. I casually mentioned the term “middle aged” in passing one day & no one has let it go since. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with growing older, so why do people get so defensive about it?
