I live a modest life.
Like did you know it doesn’t cost anything to sit in the corner of your empty room, in an apartment you share with four others, crying over whether you’ll make next month’s rent.
lol - can confirm 😂

It’s not about being in tech or any other profession.
It’s about the extent to which you (not you specifically, saying generally) are giving in to the cool, hip trends, the “scene-y” scene, and trying to emulate the LA lifestyle that is propagated on social media.
There is something out here for everyone, at almost every price point. You just have to veer away from TikTok, Instagram etc and find it for yourself.
What’s considered decent in some places might not be decent in LA. But totally doable, echoing what M1 said that there are a lot of dinner options under $50. Also, if you have the space, invite friends over instead of nights out every once in a while to save a bit more cash.
If all else fails, depending on what you do, leave Publicis, lol. I found that those large conglomerates won’t pay as much as “smaller” agencies. I started my agency career at Publicis which was a great stepping stone but I haven’t regretted leaving since.
Being a lawyer lol

Live modestly - and then move into tech lol

First and foremost I live on the east side, which while expensive, is so much cheaper. I work in biotech and my husband is in commercial real estate. Our hhi is $500k which would not get us very far in Santa Monica. In Mt Washington we were able to afford a 3 bd 2 ba home on 12k sq ft.
Pro
Love Mt Washington. Similar HHI as you, got outbid like 3x for 3 bed/2 bath houses there though 🥹🥹🥹 I still long for them….
Brother in law is in Real Estate and makes millions - usual deals get him 200k a pop - it’s mental
My bad, it's only $120k/house sold
three letters. sfv.
🎯 Came by to cosign this!
I have a great job in advertising and I still live paycheck to paycheck every month

SC1 - since you are pinpointing the mental health matter here:
I’m a CPTSD survivor and have spent thousands on mental health care myself, out of pocket - couldn’t get the help/support I needed in-network.
That said, limitations in health insurance coverage is an employer-specific issue, and has nothing to do with COL/expenses in Los Angeles.
On a related note: consider looking into the resources here. Free for most services, and $9.99/month for premium CBT therapy and coaching services. Found this to be a very useful tool to support my trauma recovery journey:

It used to be that Beverly Hills was a rich neighborhood of Los Angeles that you moved to when you "made it"
Now the entire world treats large portions of Los Angeles like that.
Patiently waiting for everyone to move to Austin so SoCal properties will drop 😂 (unfortunately this will never happen but man it’d be nice if it did)
Don’t forget bankers and lawyers and the other profession that doesn’t require any degree or high IQ at all (real estate)
True true to bankers and lawyers!! Unfortunately I don’t have those qualifications hahah. And I don’t have the uhhh requirements 🍈🍈 for high earning real estate 😂

Work in consulting
Living modestly here in the very walkable Beverly Hills. Renting, not owning a car (using Uber and Turo instead), and making a decent living.
Tech adjacent roles like Product Marketing, in my experiences, pays really well.
Something to look into 👀
Partner in a consulting firm …… still quite tight!
Cuz Im in the Cannabis biz…. Jk lol
I have a great job in consulting and I still live paycheck to paycheck (ish) with minimal in savings 😵💫🥴
Mid city and Culver City are the best places to look for affordable 1 bedrooms/2 bedrooms compared to DTLA and Santa Monica area
By the grace of God 🙏🏼
