I think the relocation time is mainly based on how fast they need you there. That said, it can also open up the field for negotiations. For example, if they need you there within a month, and you have a house to sell, negotiate for 3mos of paid/furnished housing while you sell your home, so you’re not stuck paying rent and mortgage. If you need to break a rental contract, have your company pick up the tab for that. Have a family? Ask them to reimburse you for time spent flying back and forth if you need to find a neighborhood, school district, etc.
Maybe do a little research ahead of time re: what you’d need to do, so if they ask you to give them a lump sum number, you won’t be underselling your needs. Think mortgage/rent, cost of movers, moving a car, changing titles and getting new license plates etc., school for any children, the time/cost to sell or buy or rent new place, and any other needs you and your family may have (including medical)
I was looking to make a jump overseas a few years ago as my goal for the year, and the coach I had at the time had me write out a list of literally everything I would need to do.
House / Pets / Medical / etc
Canceling gym. Joining a gym. Returning library books. Utilities. New router. Bank accounts. Goodbye dinner with friends. Etc etc etc. it felt silly at the time but it allowed me to get a better idea of the realities of how long it would actually take to get things done especially if I couldn’t just take off a month to do it all. This helped me come up with $$$ numbers and also set realities with future companies about how I could transition in a way that wouldn’t be stressful on my family.
While my goals have shifted, that list has actually come in handy a LOT when speaking with recruiters now!

Let me reframe: how much time do you ask for for the move? 3 months? 6months?
Do you have kids in school? Wait til the right time. Is your lease up in 4 months and not breaking it will save you a huge chunk of $$? Do you have a partner who will also need to look for work etc.? If they really want you, and if it’s a job with more seniority, you can bargain. A month or two doesn’t matter in the long run if it’s going to cause a lot of additional stress. Offer to visit and be in person a few times if it’s going to be a longer period before you can move.
Also, if you don’t have kids/partner it doesn’t matter. You still have a life where you are and a move is a big change. Even if you want and are excited to do it, don’t feel forced to rush into it immediately.
