If you’re trying to get pregnant, do you start avoiding certain foods/altering your diet/drink even BEFORE you do get pregos? My fear is that as we’re trying, I’ll get pregnant and realize that my diet/drinking wasn’t quite ideal. I read a few articles saying it’s not a big deal, but curious to hear your thoughts. TIA!

Hard no unless you do things in excess like smoke, consume a lot of alcohol, or eat high-mercury fish as a diet mainstay.

Nope - talked to lots of doctors about this. Since baby isn’t pulling their source of nutrients from your “diet” until the placenta is fully formed, it’s not a huge deal. Obviously though you want to start on the strongest foot so it’s always a good idea to have a healthy diet and exercise etc, but you don’t need to live as though you’re pregnant prior to getting pregnant

I tried to eat healthier to improve fertility. Also took prenatals ahead of time. Didn’t drink any alcohol either. Not sure any of it was necessary but to each their own.

Alcohol can impact implantation but that is with a lot of alcohol.

Only thing that should/“needs” to be started in advance is you should try to take a prenatal in the 3 months before conceiving but plenty of women don’t do this- that’s just the ideal scenario

So not sure if you’ve heard of the two week wait, but whenever I’m trying to have a baby, I typically eat all the stuff that you’re not supposed to have while pregnant (i.e deli meat, sushi) until I have ovulated. Then I cut out these foods until I take a pregnancy test after the two week wait. I typically don’t drink alcohol during this time because I’m not a huge fan. But if you do drink, drinking in moderation prior to ovulating should be okay

oo i haven’t and i love this. thank you!

I started taking prenatals. And I started cutting out caffeine, which wasn't necessary but I wanted to cut it out slowly rather than going cold turkey. Less headaches. But really you're allowed some caffeine even if you're pregnant, so personal preference.

My gf did dial down the drinking and generally living healthier in the months before we (agreed to) star trying.

For peace of mind I’d recommend limiting alcohol or cutting out entirely if you’re trying.

The first few weeks and even months of pregnancy can feel like not much is happening and I freaked myself out both times because I didn’t know I was pregnant (1 to ~5 weeks) and had a few drinks before getting a positive test. All is well but if you’re a worrier like me best to avoid.

Most important thing is taking prenatal vitamins, ideally at least 3 mos before you start trying. In terms of diet/ lifestyle, I just generally tried eating more whole foods (aka less junk food, potato chips, etc.). I did cut out the alcohol when we started trying because I’m just a worry wart.

I started cutting down the caffeine and taking prenatals. Other than that, I just tried to eat somewhat healthy.

Thank you all for the advice! Super helpful 😄

I took prenatal, ate avocados 😆 and reduced my alcohol intake
