If you're unassigned, can you work from home without clearing it with anyone?

I would not work from home if you are unassigned unless you are an experienced senior or above. We were told by our partner group, HR and scheduling it is a requirement if you are unassigned to come into the office by 9 am and both be available and actively seek out work versus sitting at home. If you really think hard about the responsibilities of the job when you accepted it and what you are paid for you will see why this is a bad idea. Also, I have examples of friends throughout the years (I'm a manager 2 now) who were laid off due to doing this. Things spread like wildfire in the office and putting this label on yourself will only hurt you.

like

It only sucks when you get picked up and they ask you to come by - right now

You're not supposed to do that. In Boston they were making people sign in to a log if they were unassigned. Not sure if they're doing that this year or not.

The problem is that most people that "work from home" become really unresponsive and it's very frustrating if I need a first/second year to do something.

It's okay if you take a Friday at home or so but don't make it a habit.. But as they say.. Your taking a slippery slope if you do

I was let go during the pandemic and I 100% believe it was because I had kids and could not work around the clock. I’m enjoying freelance and was recently offered a full time remote position. I’m just wondering if anyone has been through this and has any thoughts about going back FT v freelance. I can’t be sure that my freelance work will hold and FT has its benefits. Would welcome any thoughts or kind words.

How did you set your rent budget when moving in with a partner? I make £125k base (£167k inc bonus), and my boyfriend makes £95k base (£105k inc bonus). I’m used to allocating 30% of my take-home pay to rent, which is about £1800/mo for a charming neighbourhood in zone 1, but my bf’s used to paying closer to £1000/mo to live in zone 6 and balks at the rent prices I think are reasonable given our incomes and locations we want (zone 2). We both wfh so ideally want a 3BR. (Continued in comments)

Hello. I’m working on H1B and recently got a promotion. My company is amending my H1B and told me that since my new job is remote I can only work at my apartment (since it’s my legal location). Is there any chance they can figure out I’m working remotely from somewhere else? Also, I’m also in the process of applying for green card (thru employment). Does anyone know the timeline for this given my H1B is getting amended ? (My country has no waiting time).

Does your baby drink more milk when away from you? I am WFH and pumping and breastfeeding. Sometimes nanny gives baby the bottle and then baby wants / sees me and nurses after. I pump afterwards but only get like 1 oz (since she drank a full bottle). So basically, baby needed another 4 oz on top of breastfeeding. On the weekend baby drinks from me and doesn’t need more milk. Baby is 10 months. I have a freezer stash but don’t want to reduce supply too much.

My favorite part about WFH is that I experience significantly less micro aggressions and/or discrimination than when I used to have to go to the office. The downside is that there will probably be less work for employment lawyers. I don’t mind making that sacrifice. It’s harder to have a hostile work environment when you don’t have to be in a work environment 5 days a week (sometimes 6). For context, I’m a POC.

Total newbie. Today the same work that took me 5 hours to complete took 1.5hr for a coworker. I’m keep seeing this pattern on different kinds of work, from research to formatting. And I‘m definitely not a perfectionist.. I don’t know what the issue is and how to be faster. Since we’re remote, its hard to gauge how others are working. Did anyone go through this?

Since we're bragging... I now work 100% remote, bill 20 hrs a week but actually work about 10 hrs and make $75k. I feel like I have unlocked all the cheat codes and beat the game. #blessed 🙏

Quick poll. If you work remote, does your company reimburse internet? Mine has reimbursed it for years, and took it away this year. Seems like a weird move to do that now, so just curious about other's experience.

I’m fully remote for 2 years now. More productive than ever. Present for my family like never before. Have met more people from my company than I would’ve if I’d rely only on bumping into them. Have a much more focused, open and dynamic creative process with my teams. My company doubled size. Why would anyone consider going to a physical place to do work that’s delivered digitally ever again, even if for a day per year?

I have noticed a major increase in remote roles for various companies. What is driving this change?

What is a typical time for an offer to be extended? Had one informal coffee, followed by a Zoom interview with four additional attorneys, and then an in-person interview with the practice head and the hiring partner (who was present at all of these). Talks went very well, and conversation ended with how they just needed to talk to the people responsible for next steps(finance). Last meeting was one week ago. Big firm. Not a posted position so I’m the only candidate. Am I am being impatient?
