If you've been fired in your consulting career, what happened and how did you recover?

Just got benched, been completely billable till now, how long until I should be worried about potential layoffs? (Even though management is “committed” to not letting people go during covid)

Don’t know why, but I am not feeling afraid of getting laid off. And also I don’t feel like pushing to get another job in case that happens. I am fed up with this visa nonsense, the corporate slavery they have in name of H1B. And also this whole world in turmoil due to covid has left me thinking what better i could do to add value to the society. Adding to the agony of American dream is the civil unrest in US, trump again for 4 years, more guns, absurdity of USCIS etc.

Currently in a full time role at an RPO but have a potential offer in house on a 6-9 month contract with strong possibility of conversion at Hubspot. Pay is $15k higher than I make now. Would it be a bad decision to take the contract / contract to hire? I don’t doubt my ability to get converted, but the entire market is seeing huge layoffs so it makes me a little nervous. Thoughts?

Is it risky to apply to a key competitor? Assuming there isn’t a no compete clause or anything like that, I’m just concerned I could get fired if my current team found out. Is it a fire able offense?
