Congrats on the offer. If they do counter, make sure it’s signed and in writing. Do not let them promise you the world with zero timeline and no proof to back it up. Good luck. Personally, the fact that we have to provide an ultimatum for companies to pay us what we’re worth is appalling.

Be ready to leave of course. But if your manager likes you/your work and wants to keep you, they’ll bring up the counter-offer. Will probably ask if they can before they go to HR/finance to try to get it.

like

It’s not finance that’s the issue it’s the C suite who have to keep costs low to meet margin targets so they can keep their high salaries and get their bonuses. They give out raises to those they favor and withhold for everyone else

I just made a counter to someone - the conversation started “I’m really happy here…blah, blah, blah but I have another offer…would love to stay but the money is too good to pass up”

I don’t believe in counter offers. The ultimatum approach isn’t beneficial for the employer or the employee. Decisions can’t be made rashly. Budgets don’t magically expand to accommodate off cycle promotions. Retaining good talent is pivotal, but when you wait for a counter offer, it’s too late. I truly wish we could have more honest conversations in the workplace. My advice: if you’re happy but are purely leaving for compensation, stay. If you’re unhappy, leave. Compensation and title can be worked through—but it will take time. Lastly, people think the reason folks get laid off first who made a counter offer is because they know they’re looking. That’s simply not true. It’s their bullish attitude and how you approach the situation. If you came to me a few months earlier when you started to get frustrated, I could’ve worked with you. But now, you leave me in a lose-lose situation.

I once asked for a promotion for the higher-level job I was already doing after my boss was let go. My boss (one level above my former one) told me the only way I could get it is to get another offer in writing. I did, and insisted on getting the counter offer, title & raise in writing. Then, they tried to get out of paying me, claiming we were in a raise freeze. Had to threaten legal action for them to pay up. As a manager, I’ve had to fight for years to get some of my people raises. It’s not always a case that we don’t care. It’s holding companies not giving enough in the raise pools + politics.

A couple of thoughts: 1) Above all else, make sure you are ready to leave if there is no counter offer. They may not be able to match it. 2) Get any changes in writing, often a counter offer involves a lot of promises that will never come to fruition. 3) Keep it positive and say you want to grow where you are and it just hasn’t been happening so you got another offer that provides me with a,b &c. I’d love to stay here if possible but this offer is meeting me where I’m looking to be right now.

like

exactly this - big emphasis on #3. except i would say maybe something along the lines of “i reallllly like where i am, i love the team, i love working with you [your boss], and i don’t actually want to leave but this offer came upz they’re offering me xyz and though i don’t want to leave, it’s hard to ignore. but if possible i’d love to see if we could make something work here

Counter offers never end well for either party. It’s just a bandaid on the inevitable.

Good luck!!!! My manager/ company is doing nothing for my career growth, zippo, sigh. I wish you big things, you’ve got this!!!!

like

I’ll echo: be prepared to leave. I did the counter once and while my company couldn’t match it, I feel it left a bad taste in their mouth as they felt I was “trying to twist their arm.” I was also considered disloyal by looking for another job. They thought if I looked once, who’s to say I wouldn’t leave for something greater 6 months from then. Also, think about the company you’re interviewing with. Do you prefer your current job over the new one? If you stayed, would it hurt your chances to apply again later on? If you have the convo, reaffirm your commitment, connect what’s good for you with what’s good for the company, and give your boss the info they need to advocate on your behalf. People can often lose sight of what the industry standard is or how valuable someone like yourself truly is.

I think the problem with consultants is you are overpaid from the very start because you generate revenue, even with zero skills and are willing to travel. Over time that evolves to arrogance because you think you know more than your clients when the reality is your sample set is quite small. I have spent equal time on both sides and would counsel you to be careful in a remote post COVID world because we are all realizing we have more employee capacity than we thought.

Thinking about making the leap but would love to hear if the MBB hype was worth it. (FWIW: My work hours are 65-80/wk so I’m pressed to think it’ll be that much worse on the other side.)

Ever had an attorney randomly pull food that they somehow squished in their shoe during long court days. One day, it was taking forever in federal court due to the COVID backlog. An attorney was sitting at a table across from where I was sitting. Kept noticing him reaching down like he was scratching his foot then would bring his hand to his mouth. Very strange. Court concluded and I saw him by his car taking off his shoe and pulling a squished baggy with half a sandwich out of it.
