Are you looking for an excerpt?
No, I have to read the entirety of each novel. Just want to trim some of the fat out of each novel so I can have more days free for other activities to tie into the novels
The Giver is an excellent opportunity for kids to look to inside themselves for serious introspection. The readers in your class would enjoy the other three books in the series...maybe a socratic seminar with real discussion about conclusions drawn and even analyzing the writer's purpose for the book...what was going on in the world when it was written? Is there a message in the theme?
Ask yourself: Is it better that they read the books in their entirety and learn all the lessons of each and be exposed to all three? Or, are the activities so good that students should skip parts of the books?
(Given that all three are pretty short, I don’t see a lot of “fat” in any of them...)
It's more that, due to my school's schedule, our classes are on the short side. And so, if I don't cut down the percentage of each book that we read, we will literally spend each day of the next 9 weeks just reading. Which will bore my kids to tears. I want to have some days free for fun activities related to each text to break up the monotony and connect the students to each text in a more meaningful way. Also, my students cannot be assigned readings for homework, so that's not an option either.
Are you doing whole group or small group rotations?
I'll do whole group for the first couple of weeks in order to cement student knowledge of the novels, then move into small group and finally solo reading as we progress further into each novel.
