I’m > 1 year in and am already noticing there is no such thing as PTO because everyone still works during PTO. Is this the same in industry?

I started in industry and PTO is sacred there. A dude I worked with had his OOO message say: “I’ll be out of office from XX-XX. If [Company] goes out of business while I am away, feel free to blame it on me but I still won’t answer the emails”

Welcome to America.

Hahahah this made me laugh. Americans do work a lot.

I agree, as a european in the US, I don't work vacations and take all of them, plus am getting promotions and top tier rating. It's about setting that expectations and now that I'm a project lead, I plan my project meetings etc around my vacation. Very rarely, I'll get one that can't be moved and maybe I'll dial in for an hour, but that's happened like twice

like

Stick up for yourself. I check my email throughout some vacations but only to delegate anything urgent to others. It takes 1 minute a day and I never stress about it. If you don’t want to do that, then that’s also fine.

like

I have never worked during my PTO. Move to Europe.

like

This is highly dependent on the individual and your assertiveness

like

You set your own boundaries. I might check email once a day if I'm on PTO, mostly for myself to avoid coming back to a dumpster fire. But that's a personal choice I make. If you are being asked to work on your PTO, escalate it to the appropriate people

like

I've been in consulting for 1.5 years and worked in industry for 6 years. Not once have I worked on weekends, let alone on PTO. You need to set your boundaries!

like

As others have said, set your boundaries. If they don’t respect it, then leave team/firm ASAP if that doesn’t jive with your values. For the record, I believe pto is sacred

like

Say cool, let's ask HR if that's right....lots of managers think they are the big bollocks until you find them they are also just a cog

like

It is 100% up to you. The only way to reach me when I am on PTO is to literally show up at my front door and even then I can’t guarantee I’ll open the door 🤷🏾‍♀️

like

I try to go internationally on vacation (cruises and things) where I can’t bring my phone.

like

There is no such thing as this “industry” consultants like to imagine. Just other companies. Many do respect PTO, many don’t

I feel so stuck in my life (28F). I just want to find my person and start building a life together. I feel like I have nothing to look forward to. I just want to create holiday memories with my new family and instead, I’m looking at another season with my dysfunctional as hell family. I know a negative attitude and comparing myself to others isn’t helping me, but I can’t seem to lift myself out of my funk…
