Pains if being a middle manager -- having to manage both up and down. Explain to him/her your priorities, be 100% transparent of the trade offs and what you see as priorities for you and your team -- come to mutual agreement on what will be completed and what is at risk of not being done with the 24/hrs in a day. Often times these side projects are a function of their manager (a VP/SVP) throwing out random requests and there is no way around it except sacrificing WLB. If this is the case, encourage them to manage up and call it out -- VPs need to be able to speak truth to power. Hopefully the above generates some ideas.

I think it's a mixture above about setting boundaries, and managing your own workload. They need to understand that by doing the work they keep asking, it messes with the workload you have etc. Good luck!

communication my friend. It's important to set your boundaries and state your needs from your workplace. Maybe your boss just thinks you can handle it all since you haven't said anything.

What do I tell him? That I need time to manage my people and prioritize and scope out projects? Just don’t wanna seem ineffective because these are less tangible than specific deliverables/tasks

Are you sure you are managing your time effectively? If so, explain the situation to him as others said. Maybe they are short-staffed and need to hire but instead are over-burdening you, which isn't fair

I just made the switch to my new firm about 3 months ago and the partner and I have not gotten along. I’m a second year in lit, and most of his associates are more senior so he expects us to run point but during the interview I told him I still need a little mentoring. Now, every misstep I make he kills me for it. Should I make a move now or wait it out hoping it gets better?
