I'm 20 years old. New to consulting. Been rejected by 2 Clients and I think it's because I look like a kid with a baby face. Any advice on this? Not sure what to do and feel discouraged

Look like (and be) someone in the room that is the work horse. Setting up the logistics and room, take vigorous organized notes, solid fast follow-up... only speak when u know u have value to add. Play your age to your advantage... client wants to think they r paying low dollar for the aforementioned items so they should be happy to see Jr person in room doing them. Also u can play naive and ask questions in a way more senior people may look "stupid" for asking - but keep to a minimum and make them count. Empathy for you, same situation for me. I'm much older now, but hard work, positive attitude, bold moves at the right time = works out. Also leaving for MBA and returning will buy u a few more years of aging!

Had the same problem when I started. Never got kicked off a project but clients sometimes didn't take me seriously, especially female clients who told me I look like I'm their kid's age and some comments about baby face. It never escalated since they would follow it up with how they were impressed by my performance even though I was "still a baby". I grew a beard and went to the gym everyday and bulked up, worked for me.

That's on your leadership. But on your end, don't do anything to let on that you lack experience. It sounds shady I know, but you gotta fake it. Soon you'll learn nobody, even if they have 10 years of experience, really knows anything anyway.

like

Get some glasses and/or grow facial hair if you want to look older. Also, listen more and talk less as I fear it may be you rather than the age.

like

Don't take roles with heavy client face time at first. This is pretty common.

like

Be proud kid. You are 20 and already have a job! I don't remember having a clue at that age. Give it some time and I am sure you will figure it out. In The meantime, try to surround yourself with mentors and enjoy life!

Agree w/ PwC 2...fake it till you make it...

Don't do what an analyst we once considered for a role did: "Hi, client! I just graduated college a few months ago and have been on the bench ever since so I am really excited to work for you and am going to work really hard on my very first project!" Major face palm...

like

Can't grow facial hair 💁🏻‍♂️ they said lack of experience in those roles so no go for the roles. I guess that is me rather than my age. Def a catch 22.

like

Never kicked off a project but have had issues with this. I just grew a beard and the problem went away.

Another story... at age 22 I asked CEO of P&G if he ever felt underutilized early in his career. I expected a political answer. But he immediately said, "First 6yrs". Obviously it worked out for him and looking back I also think my value wasn't really realized in actuality or perception until ~6yrs.

like

I think this is an experience thing rather than an age thing. I joined consulting at the age of 26 (after doing after stuff for a few years), it was only by the time I was 28-29 I was getting significant FaceTime with clients and knew enough to add value to a conversation. My first few years of consulting was spend hunched over my laptop cranking out spreadsheet models and slide decks.

like

I staff new consultants. I set expectations early with the client. You should get the same level of support.

like

20? How did that happen? Good for you

like

Relax it will come.

like

How are you in this role at 20?

like

Smoke cigs. Will make you look older

like

Try taking some training so you can talk about that knowledge

like

Lol. Go back to high school !

like

Do business development like crazy. If you help sell the project, they will be a little more adept to let you work on the project (depending on the project of course)

like

Kinda odd to get kicked off a project lol. Clients don't usually manage it that specifically unless they think there are too many people.

Hi everyone! For those that feel comfortable, would love to see the breakdown AFC > eggs retrieved > fertilized > embryo > genetically normal (please feel free to include other steps, add in more numbers/details). I've read the averages of how it gets narrowed down, but always prefer hearing real breakdowns. I'm in the process of my first egg retrieval and trying to stay realistic. Really appreciate it!
