I’m 25 years old and started my career as a social media coordinator in travel, then for I can’t believe it’s not butter. Now I’m a marketing associate at a start up but a few friends who have seen my work said I should be in copywriting - yes I’m the friend who everyone goes to for captions as well. I have a background in advertising, with a niche in social.

Is a shift to copywriting doable… and how so? Online classes? A portfolio for sure. But what examples should I put other than social?

Yes it’s doable. You need a portfolio.

Online classes are possible. Portfolio school can help with building a portfolio and networking. If you can’t afford it, consider night classes because it really helps having a CD guiding you through the process. AdHouse or SVA offer some good ones (some online!), just research the instructors. I also recommend you first check out the books Hey Whipple, Squeeze This by Luke Sullivan, The Advertising Concept Book by Pete Barry, and Junior by Thomas Kemeny as they best summarize what the job entails.

In terms of what your portfolio needs, 4-9 great ideas expanded into campaigns, preferably full 360 campaigns. Do not go for brands that already have great work (ie, Apple) or can easily have great work (Trojan). You will need to pair up with an art director, or at least a designer to create the assets and mockups, look up MakeAdsWithMe unless you’re going to portfolio school where there will be plenty of ADs. Your current social work can be included as 1 piece, but you will need to show concepting abilities. You can look up the portfolios of copywriter graduates from VCU Brandcenter, they are always listed on their website and they will be just a part of who you will compete with for internships and entry level jobs.

I’m taking the SPHR in less than 2 months and haven’t started studying for it. How difficult is it? I just can’t seem to motivate myself to do it, I’m so mentally burnt out at the end of the day from a high stress HR job, the last thing I feel like doing is studying HR!

Thinking that doing a Masters will help arm myself with environmental / sustainability knowledge and a network.

I realize that's what makes them good Partners but it makes me wonder if I realistically need to get an MBA to keep growing and hit Partner.
