Good job confronting the issue! I just stopped cold turkey and counted the days I didn’t bite my nails, but I started counting the minutes and hours because I did it so frequently. That seemed to help me...I felt like I was always making progress. I also trimmed my nails really closely so there was nothing to chew
^ I guess it doesn’t matter but I started getting gel manicures. It made me stop biting my nails to preserve it
My parents used to rub green chillies over my nails. Believe me it worked like a charm (or a chilli)
Figure out the underlying cause of your issue. Psychotherapy perhaps.
Gum helped me. Every time I catch myself biting my nails is just chew gum. Not the best alternative I know but at least it got me to stop
Have this is still and I’m 33. I always revert back to it after stopping
Remove either nails or teeth.
"It happens when I'm nervous but also when I'm not." Sooooo all the time?
D1, I believed you, it was the "(or like a chili)" comment.
My therapist tells me that nervous ticks (like yours), which is very common, can be overcome if you do some other completely different physical action as soon as you realize you’re doing it, like standing up and taking a walk / taking water from the kitchen to drink, whatever
i used to bite my nails, until i found out what’s under them...🤢
First of all, don’t beat yourself up for it. I had to do cognitive behavioral therapy (cbt) to overcome a similar issue, and only on the other side of it do I realize how tough it was. So don’t just tell yourself it’s a bad habit—it’s very difficult to reverse. I agree with M2–my therapist had me do similar things. I also use the Strides app, which is a really flexible way to track your progress. Don’t make yourself go a whole day—do what pwc1 said. Just focus on doing 10 minutes not doing it a day. Then let yourself off the hook the rest of the day. The next week, make yourself go 15 min a day.
In any case, I highly recommend finding a therapist focused on CBT
My boss gets gel nails for this reason. Seems to work for her
Guy here and had this issue until I was in my 20s when I solved it by just frequently cutting my nails so short that I couldn't chew them without it hurting. Broke the habit for me.
I cut my nails very short and as often as possible. Because I know while I can avoid it consciously, it just takes a high pressure situation for me to forget my restraint. Has mostly worked!
Used to bite my nails , then got braces which stopped that but now I peel my nails 😩😩 having issues stopping.
I had a terrible nail biting habit as a kid. When I was 16 I started learning to play classical guitar. Needed nails on my right hand to be able to play. Was very motivated to learn and used that to kick the habit.
Are you a male or female?
D1, you are the worst
EY1 I am not kidding.
