I’m 28 and I just got married.. I wanted to ask if any of you have done or recommend meeting with a financial planner to talk about joint couple goals, investment strategies etc.?

We never did. We just discussed between ourselves when we were dating.

like

Did you discuss financial goals/strategies before marriage with your spouse?

like

You should talk to your spouse first. Maybe you are both on the same page and you don’t need to add a financial planner to the conversation.

What ever plan you have, just realize that it may need to be flexible as life events occur. For example, maybe you didn’t want to buy a house in the next 5 years but your renting a 1br apt and got pregnant or you didn’t anticipate a raise and now that house can come sooner. It’s healthy to have this conversation regularly to check in and see if your meeting your goals as a couple.

like

We are sort of on the same page but it would help to understand how we save, create joint accounts, plan for small/mid/long term goals etc.. for that, did you just read up online or seek help to understand how to work around that?

like

What bank do you use? You can go in and talk to them about starting a joint account with your spouse.

Have the conversation with your spouse on how income will be put into the account. My wife and I do our full paychecks into it and discuss major purchases. I know others may contribute a % of their salary to the joint account and the rest goes to a personal account. Do what works for you as a couple

like

One method is to have one financial conversation “date” every month. Start with an easy topic, order takeout and keep it conversational. Then after dinner move it to a computer.

A shared Personal Capital account lets you mark which account is yours/theirs and jointly plan for savings goals. You can see each other’s financial picture without directly making every account joint. That takes the pressure off merging all the accounts on day 1, and gives you time to talk about how you want to best organize.

Yup, Mint and Personal Capital are really similar.

I like PC because the retirement simulator allows for scenarios where my partner and I to retire 20 years apart.

Curious to hear from people with med school debt: what is the best way to finance med school? Is taking on student debt a big deal if you get a high-paying job after school? The reason I ask: I paid for my son's BS degree (including housing and meal plans), and he's entering med school soon. He has asked if I will pay anything towards his support in med school. But he worked all through his undergrad degree and saved sine I was paying for the major expenses, so I kind of feel like this is his thing to take on now. AITA?

My wife has approved H4 extension notice (i-797) and we just filed her first ever H4 EAD last week. She need to travel to India for medical reasons and she will need to have H4 visa stamped in order to immigrate to the US.
Our concern is, will it affect her i-765 application as she will receive a new i-94 and H4 Visa which will differ from already filed i-765?
In that case, does she have to wait out in India till her H4-EAD is processed in order to avoid i-94 mismatch?
Appreciate your help!
