I’m 28 and I was recently laid off. I currently have two offers. One from a smaller accounting firm with work life balance and another from a top 10 accounting firm with a higher salary. Which con’t..

IMO it’d be easier to go to the smaller firm in a few years if your prioritize work-life balance down the road. It’s harder to move to a larger firm later in your career if you ever wanted that. I’d chose the larger firm.

The small firms all lie about work life balance. It’s actually more work. Harder to go under the radar there as well

Small firms are a huge gamble. I’d want to thoroughly vet the firm and interview some employees, and read any Glassdoor reviews, the next time I join one. Mine claimed work life balance. My work life balance is worse than B4 was. The same metrics and hours requirements are there, but with the smallest budgets possible. A lot of people eating time to make their metrics look good. Messy, unsophisticated clients. Very limited personal development. Very little support for remote work and standard technology. That’s been my experience in tax at a small firm.

Which top 10? I used to work in one but their local office is just as small as other small local firm. You might need to consider that

Went from Grant Thornton to a firm with 200ish people and I'm SO much happier. Work life balance still isn't perfect but there's so much more flexibility and such a better culture

VERY true. Biggest career mistake I've ever made if I'm being honest

A year ago I’d have picked the higher salary. Now - WLB all the way. Assuming that the lower salary is still reasonable and enough to live on.

It’s funny you think there’s such thing as a work life balance, the big 4 tell you they have that too, 3 years later I’ve yet to see it

Man this Bowl is filled with some angry mid-levels. We get it, this job was hard for you, but it is for juniors now, too. Stop punching down.

I don’t think the juniors are entitled, they just want to share in their firms’ wealth. Surely any salary increases for the Classes of 2019, 2020, and 2021 would easily pay for themselves through billable hours.

Need advice. I want to pay off my student loans this year (~20k left). Does it make sense to drop my 401k contribution from 10% to 6% (which is still full match) to increase cash flow and put that extra money toward the debt. Or is the money better off in the 401k/invested?

Problem is my clients are boring and need handholding w/basic bookkeeping. I miss the audited financials at the top 10. I feel like my skills are atrophying here. I don't know where to go since this city has no big 4 and only a few top 25 firms but they all pay less than what I make now. I prefer office life. Would you stay or look for fully remote positions?
