You need to do the ROI calc for yourself - however you do not necessarily need to “kill yourself on an accelerated path” to get a return - I have no idea why people think these things lol.
Your post-MBA associate salary would be ~30% higher than your current one and will accelerate much faster than at Deloitte - so it depends a lot on how much you think you could go up in the next 2 years at Deloitte or if you have a major promotion/milestone in the horizon.
Other important thing is that getting MBB is not guaranteed so you’d need to be comfortable with the idea that you may not get your ideal outcome.
Thank you!
I know the FT2 programs are the most traditional path to MBB but there’s some placement from the 1yr programs too if already coming from consulting. I think OP should look into the 1yr Kellogg, Johnson, etc and do the consulting track.
Thanks- will look into it!
If your goal is just to work at McKinsey then I think you’d be better off networking like crazy and trying to get a referral as an experienced hire. McK etc only hire consultants out of MBA so you wouldn’t be a manager till 38.
I have seen experienced hires at higher levels than entry, especially if they have >5 years experience. But MBA hires never really deviate from the McKinsey “associate” level regardless of experience
You’re too old only if you feel that way.
Fact
Also, you are already old (no offense).
When you are done with yohr MBA you will be heading for 40.
tbh, the career you weren’t able to have bu your mid 30s... Chances are you will not do much better later.
Sure.
You may want to go part time /exec mba. That way you still make your salary.
If I’m going to do it, I want the full experience
Are you just going back to school for the future money. If yes, then I don't know that it will help. You'd be losing out on $130k+ for 1.75 years. And even at 70% cost, presumably you'd still have to foot the bill for housing and moving and the socializing and trips.
That being said, there are other reasons for wanting an MBA. I just don't think the ROI is a pro in this case.
And no, you're not too old. Just be aware that most of your cohort will be younger. And if you don't think that's your vibe after visiting the schools, that's a huge block to networking.
What was your career prior to joining consulting?

Exec MBA is what I’m going for
McK1. My goal is to get the most out of the curriculum to shore up my hard business skills and strengthen my weak areas. I also aim to utilize the program to network with other later life business people who are looking to pursue academics and move their careers to the next level through education and shared experience.
This has been super helpful for me. Thanks for the discussion, everyone!
