Even if you didn’t have kids, I wouldn’t do it from an ROI perspective. Assuming you are going full time, you’ll spend $200K and miss out on almost 2 years of salary. You would then graduate and take a job at a lower salary than had you stay at your current firm for those 2 years.

I did an INSEAD GEMBA at age 34, finished at 35. It cost around $140K including travel. My total comp beforehand, in a job I hated was around $150K. A year after graduating with my MBA it was around of $270K, and I loved my new job. I also made 50 amazing friends in nearly as many countries. Obviously, your mileage may vary, but I wouldn't change a thing if I could do it all over again.

Before MBA, US Federal practice at B4. Afterwards, tech sales pricing strategy and deal negotiation at FAANG. Got into INSEAD off the consulting brand and my international experience in the US military doing global construction contracting.

You won’t really have much short term gain, but long term it’ll pay dividends. Aim for M7.

like

If you're doing the right stuff now with a good undergrad, you don't even need the MBA or MBB for FAANG, you can go there now. I was a hair shy of an offer at one as an M1 and knew others that did get the offers, but I was staffed to that particular FAANG as a consultant. I suppose if you want the covered product management role, that might require more, but I was going to come on as a BSA at about 215 + 100k RSUs from all accounts and I'm not that exceptional in consulting terms, though perhaps somewhat unique as an experienced hire.

Don’t think I would do it. What would you want to do that you currently can’t without an MBA?

So, heres the move. I'm going for it because why the F not? An MBA cant hurt and the job opportunities coming out of a top program will be excellent. I will be applying to executive MBA programs so I can work and go to school at the same time. No loss on the earnings front or my status at the firm. Family is supportive. Game on. Thanks all!

Great call OP! Will your firm sponsor you and/or work with you on your schedule? - depending on which program, you likely need to be gone one week a month or every other Friday

Yes

like

I am making good money, and a top 20 program would probably be the only thing worth my time. This means that NYU and Columbia are my two best options, but they're $200k! I feel like the MBA train has left the station with my current earning power and responsibility.

like

Op, what is it that you want to do after graduating, or are you going for the experience and/or network?

Sounds to me like "my uncle offered me a free doormat. Is it worth buying a new house to put it in?" :)

It's not because I have been thinking about my MBA for quite some time. Life has just been happening and leading me further away from the MBA over the last 5 years. Now finding out that a relative can help me realize at least the first step? I need to consider how to navigate these waters. First step? Considering the good money I'm making, my performance at big 4, my family dynamic --- does it even make sense to study like a mad man over the next 6-10 months for something I possibly dont need??

Can you do an employer sponsored part time MBA at Columbia or NYU? Might be your best option of near term pay and stability plus longer term resume benefit.

like

The Executive MBA course at either NYU or Columbia would probably be the best fit as I could go Fridays and Saturday's for 2 years. Part time format? Would have to look into it more...

like

Echo part time MBA option, especially if you could get your firm to sponsor it!

like

What are you currently making? That'll help determine your roi and true cost of pursuing the mba

I'm currently making $162k at the end of M2 performance year, but I have received an outstanding performance award this year and my scatter plot has me in the top right most corner (if that even matters).

Nope

Will your firm pay for it? That would be a deciding factor for me

Makes sense - but I also know a few folks who really didn’t want to pay for tuition and stuck it out for a couple years before pivoting. Depends on each situation

It’s noteworthy it unless your company pays for it.

op do it! There are also part time programs for some top mba schools

No

Sponsor is $10k per semester I think. And my practice will work with me on schedule.

Hey fam. Appreciate your inputs on this: I used to be a software developer and currently work as a tech risk consultant (CISA, CRISC certified). Have completed a couple of cyber courses but do not have prior cyber experience. Most cyber sec job postings require prior experience in cloud, aws, devops etc. Applied to a couple of roles but no avail. A) Can I start a career in cyber security without prior experience? B) Will CISSP or relevant cyber certifications help?
