I’m 4 and half months pregnant. A recruiter reached out. Should I disclose that during our initial conversation? If not, when would be the appropriate time to share that?

No! Unconscious bias. Legally, you do not need to disclose. If process goes quickly, tell them after accepting the offer. Reference: just started a new job at 3 months pregnant. Haven’t told them yet. No one plans for this kind of timing. Life happens. I was upset to lose more fully paid maternity leave benefits, but in the scheme of my life, this move is worth it, and a few months off is a mere blip for you in your new job! Good luck :)

To the recruiter, absolutely no. To the hiring manager, future boss, depends. While you will be protected from potential discrimination by waiting until after the contract is signed, I’d also consider the impact it’ll have on your relationship with your future team. Personally, I’d be more appreciative of someone letting me know after it is evident they are the top candidate for the job, but before they accept the offer.

Hell no. No need to let them know they are getting two for one!

LOL this comment honestly made my day.

It’s all remote right now. No one will find out

like

Definitely wouldn’t say anything at this point. The appropriate time is after you accept the job and have a signed contract. Pregnancy discrimination is real.

Even then 3 months notice is plenty. Sign, join, set a good impression and then tell them and have a plan in place. Hiring managers dont say it anymore, but it's basically expected when your hire a woman between approx 25-38 and they have it in the back of their minds. Back in my mom's day they literally wouldn't put her on traveling projects she begged for because they said "No, you have a toddler, you'll come crying home and quit in a month. No." So she quit, joined another firm that would send her since she then lied that she was single, unmarried and childless. Today she's a PPMD. 🤩 Go get that career opportunity hun! 💃

I would not suggest you hide it, but no need to share it in the initial stages. If you get to the offer stage, you owe this info to the hiring manager so that he/she isn’t blindsided. It is a tactful conversation to be had at the right time, but first focus on getting the job offer 🙂

Understandable, however: please be aware that you hiring a pregnant candidate does not mean OP won’t be exposed to discrimination. If she mentions this, she absolutely will be.

like

You are under no obligation to disclose that during the hiring process and will open yourself to potential discrimination if you do.

Before accepting the new job, I would review their benefits thoroughly to understand how much paid leave and FMLA you would receive if you haven’t worked for the new company a full year before going out. Understanding your full financial position is important in decision making.

I’ve seen the other side of this indirectly. A colleague in a previous career field hired someone for a lead role and that person informed her on her first day at work she was pregnant. My colleague was furious and held a grudge the entire time they worked together. It affected everything between them at at the office in a very negative way.

like

I wouldn’t.

So if they offer you a job you need to dig into the benefits before accepting. I almost switched when 4 months pregnant but the other organization would have offered me NOTHING more than the CA maternity/bonding while my current job paid me for 100% for 4 months. Many companies have requirements that you are there for a year before being eligible. So it would have been like a 20k hit. Wasn’t at Deloitte btw.

Would be so interesting to be able to link gender to answers here. I (M) say don’t say anything, but my wife is looking for new jobs and we’re trying, and it’s such a tough question/situation. Good luck OP!

Thanks! We started trying right after I got my current job and it took us a year. I planned to stay put until after maternity leave. Then an AWS recruiter reached out and we don’t say no to an exit opportunity to Amazon.

like

Nope.

M here. Not an expert, but I would think an appropriate order of operations: 1. Get offer 2. Review benefits (to make sure it is still a good move for you) 3. Accept/ reject offer 4. If accept, disclose pregnancy 5. Set start date 6. Plan for FMLA I think Amazon can absorb your FMLA/ plan accordingly.

Nah.

You should be honest

Ask engagement details and make sure they are not looking for a release or critical support when u want to take off - be professional even if u don’t want to discuss your pregnancy

If you have nothing to hide, then tell the truth. If you plan to take 3 months off after delivery, just imagine what the conversation would be like if you were hiring someone for an important role and they said, “just FYI, I’m taking 3 months off after my first 4 months here....” Would you want them to let you know that or wait until they were working for you and you couldn’t do anything about it?

like

Oh please. They will make up a bs excuse and not hire her

Yea my SO and I held off on plans for a baby for this reason. We’re moving and she’s hunting for jobs. But she works in healthcare and not remote. You could get away with remote nature

It’s hard to plan for a baby tho. There is never a perfect time for it given our jobs are always demanding. We’ve trying for a year (started a few months after I got my current job) and are just happy that it finally happened.

My MIL has made remarks to my husband that she doesn’t understand why we need a nanny for our infant since I am able to WFH (I’m a biglaw associate). She also doesn’t get why we have a cleaner and dog walker and seems to imply we’re wasting our money by outsourcing funds on things we can do. She was a SAHM so I guess I understand why she feels that way, but how do I explain to her why these things are necessary? I actually love my MIL but this is driving me nuts.

Wife and I are going in with my BIL and SIL to pay for a retirement/40th anniversary/MIL's 60th birthday trip to an island for my parents in law when they retire next year. They think we forgot about all of those events and are going to lose it when we give the gift at Christmas. Father in law has had a lot of frustration, getting included in two mass layoffs in two years and taking two straight 40% pay cuts at the end of his career. We're so excited to give them something to look forward to.

Amazonians: Do you have an surrogacy benefits? PwC recently enhanced surrogacy (or adoption) benefits up to $25k per child (lifetime max of $75k I believe). I know Amazon is significantly larger and likely doesn’t offer as lucrative of a benefit, but curious if there is something like this there?
