I’m not a mom but I believe there are things way more important than work/getting designated. You won’t be pregnant everyday but you can always get designated to EM. I hope things improve for you!
I remember how sick and tired I was during the first trimester.
Prioritize your health. You’ll do your best to manage taking time for you and your family all the while still pushing in your career.
Congrats snd good luck!
This was literally me in my first tri. (I got designated at 9wks along… McK also!) I was so sick, I literally had no choice but to tell my team. I was leaning out of the zoom frame / turning off my camera to throw up during client meetings!!
I said to them “look, there’s something I have to tell you all. I’m not really personally ready to share, but my body isn’t giving me a lot of choice, so I’m asking you to please keep it close. My husband and I just found out we’re expecting. Part of the reason that I’m telling you now is because it’s making me really ill and I might need your help covering meetings here and there, but I’m not going anywhere, and I’m still looking forward to all of the impact we can drive together as a team!”
The immediate team were the only ones that knew and were super supportive! It was also a bit of a load off to know that leadership was aware of the situation so that it didn’t look like I was just half-assing things or disappearing during meetings.
I say go for it. If this holds you back from designation this time, you’ll get it in your second tri. Good luck and CONGRATS!! 😊
Can you talk to your ED & PD about what you need to continue to deliver at your traditional level? For example, do you need to make sure you can carve out some time to nap (should be easy) or would you want an AP/more Senior EM to lean in a bit (might be a bit trickier)? Or a senior ASC that can run with a portion of the work without oversight? Sometimes ED/PD can make changes to better support you.
I know someone who took a couple of weeks off and then rotated to a recruiting ambassador role to make it through the first tri, the main thing is you need to prioritize yourself and your baby and sometimes that means slowing down a bit in the short term.
I’m still struggling to accept that mentality (now in my 3rd tri and up for AP), but I’m telling myself one extra designation cycle does NOT matter in the long term.
No matter what, you’re doing a great job!

Honestly there’s not a lot of clear structural support options. Most women I know just kind of push through and aim to survive. Even when I’ve told my team early that I’m expecting its not really like work is taken off the plate. Unfortunately I think you have to be really really sick to get short term disability, which means often your only option is to take vacation or an unpaid leave of absence. Some companies are good about helping you find something quieter (e.g., pro bono) for a bit but even that is a bit hit or mess depending on timing and business needs. It sucks, I wish we could better solve for this
First trimester is by far the worst, but for me I was able to push through the tiredness. Would try to squeeze in a 30 min nap if I didnt have a meeting, or a nap around 5 right after work. It really helped!
