I’m 8YOE, non-Eng, and I really want a brief sabbatical (3-4 months) from work. I’m thoroughly burned out and find I don’t know what I want to do anymore. Nothing seems appealing - no other companies out there seem interesting, and at the end of the day, the pay is capped and they’re ‘just jobs’. More than once this year, I’ve thought about quitting and becoming an entrepreneur, but then I worry about my employability after, should things fail.

Any advice?

Please take a leave of absence. I was there and it was the best decision - it saved my life. It’s short-term disability and you can take up to 3 months at full pay. Just need to connect with onemedical or Lyra health so they can evaluate you first and can fill out your paperwork (unless a primary care physician you already work with is willing to do it). Sedgwick is pretty fast and as soon as you file it, you can go on your leave and have some time before the paperwork is due back to them from the doctor/therapist. If you need help sorting through that reach out to the stay & thrive team for a 1 x consult (they accept all googlers for consults): go/Stayandthrive-support

Hope this helps:

It doesn’t interest me
how old you are.
I want to know
if you will risk
looking like a fool
for love,
for your dream,
for the adventure of being alive…”

If you have the means to take a break I always out for your mental health. It’s good to see how you will do as an entrepreneur by testing the market after work. You could start an instagram page or a Shopify page and test it out for a year before making a decision.

This is a great idea

Have you talked with a therapist or career coach ? Sounds like you need to create a plan.

A therapist could help you explore options and sequence things…. to make sure you have a clear understanding of your goals. I am suggesting this because you mentioned being burned out. And maybe you are struggling with depression ?? When everything is blah…. seems the same.. that is a symptom of my depression getting worse.

The coach would help less with being burned out…. but can also help you explore options and create a plan.

Can you take some time off and have a “do nothing” vacation … connect to nature or enjoy an old hobby.

You can use a mix of sick leave and short term disability or just short term disability, my manager just did this. I’m at Google too

It could definitely be good for you to take some break to give yourself time to first get over that burnout (this could be the core problem) and enjoy some time with friends and family. This will give you the time to decide whats best for you and you’ll also be taking that decision mindfully when you are at your best.

Product Design Engineer, interviewing at Apple (Cupertino) and at Meta (Seattle/Redmond). Not at the offer stage yet, but I'm contemplating where I would relocate with family.
No idea about team/culture/stability differences yet.

The non-work factors I'm debating are:
1. Cost-of-living (housing!). Could probably afford a nice ~$1.25M SFH in Seattle suburbs sooner than a fair $1.5-2M near Cupertino.
2. Public School quality. Unsure private will be affordable.
3. Weather/region: activities
