I’m a 1.5 yr associate at a high quality L&E boutique in NYC, but I really want to do M&A/Corporate. I took the job because it was my best offer out of law school (T14). I had pretty solid grades. Is this possible? How can I get an M&A job at an Amlaw firm?

Talk to a recruiter and be willing to start as a first year. It’s early enough in your career that you should be able to switch quite easily. Just have a good story as to why you want to do transactional work.

like

Ask your friends that went Corp from law school to give you names of recruiters. They get a ton of inbounds if they’re at a good firm and it won’t hurt them to give you these names.

The two biggest pieces that help are (1) knowing and being able to convey your transferable skills and (2) finding mutual connections to firms/ jobs you are interested in. With these two pieces, you can get referred/ recommended by someone (or ideally more than one person) to stand out from the 400 other resumes, and then have a story to tell of why your skills fit their needs.

Re. Recruiters: don’t be afraid to connect with multiple recruiters. It can only help. However, keep in mind that they are looking for their commission, so they are not necessarily fighting for you, but rather fighting for whichever resume fits the employer the best. Continue your own search even while discussing opps with recruiters.

Like others have said, you are young enough in your career to make a switch, but be prepared to take a class year hit. T14 school with solid grades and coming from a respected boutique is a good starting point. Feel free to DM me if you’d like to chat. Yes, I’m a recruiter :)

Do you do deal work in your current practice (i.e. non litigation work)? If so, i think your background in the labor and employment work would be seen as a strength, along with your experience doing deal work.

Thanks—Do you think it’s better to approach open positions with a recruiter or on my own?

There is nothing more exhausting than figuring out how to tell your boss they’re wrong.

My boss happened to be wrong a lot this week, and I feel like I could sleep for a week. 😅🥲

So far, I’ve been posing my answer as a question to appear humble and also apologizing for confusion I didn’t create.

I hope it’s just Labor Day glitches and next week is better. ❤️ And, yes I’m neurodivergent.

Considering moving into this apartment complex, and it's a gorgeous little gem and recently renovated, but I just learned that it's a former WWII US Army medical facility... So, like, I'm not super into ghost stuff, but it's kind of eery to imagine sleeping in the same room where some poor WWII soldiers might have gotten their feet amputated or whatever. That, and apparently the leasing office isn't great. All that said, should I go for it? 🤔

How's everyone doing? I was on social media today and reading about the Adam Toledo video and it took me back to last June, which on top of the pain from seeing this racist system continue to win out, June was my lowest billing month and hurt my confidence about hitting hours compared to my white peers.

How are other people dealing with 1) trauma of another racist murder by cops and 2) impact on work? I am not black, so my pain does not compare but I can't act like things are fine either...

I got an offer to work as a commercial real estate agent at Avison Young. My background is in residential sales. I’m wondering how complex working in commercial sales is.
1- Am I responsible for generating leads and networking just like residential?
2- Are there growth opportunities in this field; like is there a corporate ladder in this path to look forward to?
I. would like some advice to consider from those in the industry. Big thanks!!

Any market considerations before refinancing my student loan with current rates? They’re giving me a .75-1% drop.

It’s worth it to refinance at this rate to save paying $1000 of interest albeit credit gets hurt. My only concern is missing out on inevitable lower rates forthcoming.

I’ve worked the last nine years for my state legislature as an attorney analyst, drafting and analyzing proposed legislation. I’ve primarily worked on health professional regulations. Next year, I will apply for student loans forgiveness under the public service program and would like a change. Has anyone considered opening a franchise? I would love to transition from law to business but have zero experience and am thinking a franchise may be the best option. If you’ve decided you just don’t like practicing law, especially after several jobs, what have you done to leave? Do you feel compelled to use your JD in some way because, “well, I already got it”? Or are you okay moving in an entirely new direction?
I’m thinking of starting a new business unrelated to law. The JD and practice experience will obviously come in handy with typical business management issues like negotiating and enforcing contracts, basic HR issues, etc. (Cont. in comments)
