Congratulations!!! Embrace that imposter syndrome as a part of your growth. It’s an indicator that you are uncomfortable and that’s where growth happens.
As a director, you will need to manage a team so find a team you can trust and let them be great at what they do. Some of the biggest mistakes I see people in management make are competing with their employees or being a micro-manager. Let your team shine for the work they do as it is a reflection of you. Hire people smarter than you and be willing to learn from them. You don’t have to know everything, you just need to see the forest from the trees 😉
What's the scope of work for this role? Or how much of this job is completely new? One piece of advice that's stuck out to me is ~20% of your next role should be new. That's enough to push yourself, enough newness to grow, but not so much it's overwhelming. If this situation is going to be 50+% new then find/create a support network. Set real expectations for yourself, and do the best you can.
If this is 20-30% new, then this is the right role. Take confidence that this step is going to be hard, but you're capable of doing well.
Cheers to the new role and good luck!
Sure, I’ll be responsible for website design and SEO, social media, copywriting, as well as creating and implementing strategies to market the company.
I have to say, I love the way you’ve broken down the percentages. I definitely feel like I’m within the 20% quota. Working with so many smaller companies I’ve had to wear many hats and optimize guerrilla marketing. I have experience within all the required areas, I’ve just never been completely in charge of a team and the decision-making.
My advice is to be confident in your strengths, and aware of areas where you struggle, and structure your team/strategies accordingly! If you thrive with the creative side, but struggle with project management, make sure you have people or tools around you to compensate. No one is awesome at EVERYTHING, but you can play to your strengths and learn if you’re strategic about it. Congratulations and good luck!
First off, CONGRATS! That is amazing. I’m also 24 and would be freaking out, but if you got offered the position, they have faith in your skills and abilities. Trust in yourself that you can do this!!! Don’t be afraid to ask questions. With the right research and time, you’ll be dangerous no matter what. Best of luck to you!
Thank you so much! I’ll definitely be using all my spare time to research and prepare a detailed plan for what I wish to accomplish in my first 30 days, as well as a preliminary marketing strategy.
Good luck and go for it! But pro tip: please learn how to use the word whom correctly. 😉
Thank you, I intend to do so. I know the correct usage. I also know “24 year-old” is missing a hyphen and my commas before and after digital marketing manager aren’t necessary.
As a social media manager I am sure you are aware that mistakes sometimes happen when typing quickly on a phone.☺️

How many years of experience do you have?
5/6 years of experience. I’ve worked within an agency, as well as in house for numerous brands/industries. I’ve also freelanced as well, assisting new companies with establishing brand identities and executing product launches.
