Also consider West Hollywood or the Fairfax district. Lots around there and your commute would be a breeze.
Culver is nice but a little farther away, and it's gotten extremely congested.
Sawtelle has cool areas but it's farther out.
Los Feliz and Silver Lake are great options, but again you'd be a bit farther out. Koreatown is pretty cool too.
You're right about Highland Park. I love it but you'd be pretty far.
Keep in mind that every place has its own vibe, so your opinion is all that matters. Maybe try to check out the neighborhoods. Some people love the east side while others never want to cross Lincoln Blvd.
I moved to WeHo and should mention that the trade off I realized is that it's pretty difficult to get anywhere from here, and the same goes for Beverly Hills. It's minimum 20 minutes to a freeway in any direction.

Sometimes it took me 40 minutes to go from Brentwood to Westwood so don’t underestimate the time to get from one side of the 405 to the other. If I were you, I’d look around the area between Beverly and 3rd St / La Brea and La Cienega. There’s a lot of restaurants and shops around Joans on 3rd that are walkable.
