Yes I need this too! About to leave a big firm to become partner at small, 3 person firm... been an attorney for 3 years- definitely nervous.
How is your role expanding? What additional responsibilities?
You got this! In would suggest you set some protocols for yourself (in-line with firm procedure) — what is your response time? How do you document the verbal interactions? Delegate setting up meetings/teleconferences to your assistant. Put aside time on your calendar for drafting (it is easy to get thrown off task by a random client phone call). Involve your staff — ask them (if they are experienced) what they have observed that it beneficial to the relationship. See what works for you and go from there.
Have confidence in what you know when speaking to clients, even if you don’t feel like you “should”. The biggest thing they’re looking for is confidence, and someone who listens. It gets easier the more you do it.
As for the work, don’t be too hard on yourself, there will be growing pains. Just keep your head down and put in the time and effort, soon you’ll look back and be able to see how far you’ve come in such a short time
(I was in the same boat about a year ago when we lost several attorneys at the same time and I ended up fronting the work load of 3 attys plus myself for several months while we hired)
Taking leaps of faith is part of practicing law. They call it the practice of law because it takes practice. Two or three years out, you have basic building blocks to issue spot. Make sure to stay in touch with your former colleagues, and mentors at other firms. Join an Inn of Court or Barristers group to expand your network. That way you have someone to call to troubleshoot cases / assignments. The partners at your new firms won’t let you sink. Good luck!
It’s a great opportunity and the best way to learn. I’ve been practicing for 7 years now and my best learning experiences were where I was in totally over my head— and not because I screwed up. If you don’t take risks, you won’t grow- simple as that!
This is a wonderful opportunity for you to advance your career and your skill set. Embrace it! The key is to stay organized and learn to delegate were appropriate.
