I’m a 2nd year tax manager. I’m one who’s all about building relationships, helping clients solve problems and selling gets me super jacked. I’m outgoing and pretty average technically. We’ve been having year-end planning discussions with clients and I sit there not at all interested and have no desire to run the discussions myself. Is this a sign I should get out of this profession? Any advice?

Jacked to help the client solve problems but not interested in helping them with year end planning? Seems a little contradictory. But if you are good at selling and comfortable with clients I would say stick it out..all you need is average technical skills but if you show exceptional selling skills and bring money into the firm you will be on fast track to partner. You should be using these year end planning convos to work on this - sell them estate planning etc etc. If you aren't making moves as second year manager might as well walk out now!

It certainly is contradictory. I feel I struggle because I don’t have any passion for accounting/tax. My motivation is to get the work off my desk and build relationships…that’s it. Then to top it off I don’t put any effort into learning the new tax laws because I’m stretched too thinly as it is and just let my team/partner just do it for me. I’m thinking about throwing in the towel after busy season, just not sure what I’d do as I definitely wouldn’t want to stay in accounting.

You have some knowledge since you made it to manager right? I know a lot of people in the tax world and very few are truly passionate about it. BUT you are passionate about selling and that's the biggest hurdle for these tax nerds to overcome once they make it to the precipice of partner. Just focus on that aspect of things and push yourself to digest some tax here and there. Once you get to partner you can just focus on selling and if it's technical things you have the support of hundreds of subject matter experts (assuming you are in a big firm). Unless you feel financially secure enough to start your career over again I would say stick it out.

Any advice on dealing with a particularly critical client? I’m confident in the work I and my partners do. I think we add value and are great at what we do. I have a client who just attacks everything I do and goes to my boss at the drop of a hat. I’m starting to experience significant anxiety every time I see an email from this person. This morning I woke up to another critical email to my boss with a copy to me. I’m at a loss and now questioning my work and concerned about my job.

I started at a new firm this year in January. I had a billable goal that was given to me mid year of around 1750 house for the year. I am nowhere near that and definitely will not meet the goal. I had so many non billable hours I was forced to take when I first came in. I worked my ass off in busy season. At my previous firm I never fell short of hours as it was B4. This firm is mid sized and more focused on WLB. My question is how bad do you think this will affect my comp??
