Now is the time to ask. Maybe at your next evaluation, but if you had one recently, don’t wait a year.
And you might be surprised, being a great associate is a very different thing than being a strong partner candidate (among other things, they might have caps on how many partners they can make in your department per year based on practice group needs etc - and the cap might be 0 in some years). But good you’re starting to think about this seriously !
They’re not going to give you a firm answer on whether or not you’re a good partner candidate and I doubt they’d respond with anything other than enthusiasm you want to try, but it’ll be helpful info for you to think about whether you want to gun for partner, stick around as a senior associate/counsel, or make some other kind of exit like in-house in the next 2-5 years.
Agreed with C1 - ask your practice group leader or business lead for time to talk, and ask those questions. You’ll get a lot of insight into what it’s like and where you stand. Don’t wait until year 7-8
Ask now, find a partner you trust or maybe someone who has recently left that is comfortable being candid with you. I'm a third year at a firm where track has been 6-9 and partners are talking to me now about this stuff (not the full gamut, but enough for me to ponder on) and indicating they are open to questions. If partners are cagey about answering your questions, you might want to look elsewhere bc that's not very welcoming anyway.
Same boat, curious of responses.
