I’m a 5th year in Philly. I’ve jumped around a bit, I’m at my third firm. I have really good experience, a few jury trials, tons of deps and arbs, and recently worked on two class actions and an MDL. I’m trying to make a jump from my insurance defense firm to a more “commercial” and “complex” firm but I’m not getting the interviews. I’ve rejected a few offers because the pay increase wasn’t worth leaving. Any advice on how to make myself stand out more amongst the other applicants?

Try networking with alums/friends at bigger firms. Always helps to have someone on the inside pushing for you.

Thank you. I don’t disagree. I have worked with some big law firms on a class action and MDL, and some associates pulled for me to no avail. Are these hiring people looking only for Harvard law and a Supreme Court clerkship (or similar)?

I might be able to help. DM me.

@OP—have you thought about going to the other side? I mean insurance recovery or insurance coverage?

I have. I’ve interviewed with a few firms that did some coverage work, but I turned an offer because the pay was just as bad.

That’s interesting. Have a few friends at the “most prominent” plaintiffs’ firm in the city, and they are paid very very poorly compared to what the partners make. No set bonus structure either. No percentages of settlements/verdicts. I have no idea if other “prominent” plaintiff firms are similar in terms of comp but I will explore that avenue. Thank you.

I might be able to help. DM me.

Don’t know where else to post this, seeking advice: I was let go 4 days after telling my company about my pregnancy. No reason given. Was abusive, horrid company and my direct manager (COO) knew the issues and that the CFO was talking shit about me in a meeting I had already joined, etc. C Suite mentioned numerous times that they are advising me to ‘protect me’ from CFO, etc. A lawyer told me to ask them for bigger severance than offered because was bait and switch and also discriminatory.(Cont)

In need of advice. I am wrapping up my masters in accounting while I am working in consulting; however, I am interested in tax. I want to transfer when I finish in May but seems like all the openings posted in ToD seems to be for tax seniors and above. I have pretty strong connections with tax PPMDs but not in my local office (not looking to move). Would it make more sense for me to leave Deloitte for an associate level tax position or take my chances at an internal transfer to tax senior?

Area: IT Audit and my Year of experience is 10 years and the package offered was 19 LPA. Is it worth accepting the offer? As of WFH as was agreed, however, over a period I have to move to Kochi from Bangalore and my current CTC was 16.7 LPA.

Plus hospital visit during pregnancy and having family around to help out may be challenging if CoViD -19 lingers longer than expected. I really need some career path advice! Trying to figure out whether it’d be better in the long run to (a) accept an offer from a bigger firm in a better market than my current firm that’s for a position in a practice area I have 3 years of experience in but know I don’t like/want to keep working in, or (b) stay at the smaller, less prominent firm I’m currently at (and still in the same practice area I know I don’t like) for now but keep applying for positions directly in another practice area.

It seems partners are much more flexible with associates who have kids than with those who don’t. If it’s okay for my colleague with a kid to leave at 5 pm and log on later, why isn’t that the same for me (no kids)? My obligations might be different, but I still have a life and want to be able to do certain things, like catch that evening workout class or cook dinner for my partner. As you can probably tell, my firm is operating 100% in person. There is no point here — I’m just whining.

MA insurance coverage question. Client insurer is trying to close out a claim where insured was reasonably liable and insurer paid out the claim. Insurer sent a general release to claimant. General release has the standard language releasing “all know and unknown claims.” Claimant is saying that it won’t sign release with the “unknown claims” language and retained counsel who is saying it’s bad faith and violation of MGL 93A /176D to insist on having the general release signed as is.
