i agree. lots of talented creatives in my class left by the wayside because of that requirement
I think it’s because a lot of agencies don’t offer employment visas for entry level talent (since they can’t make the claim to the gov in the immig paperwork that there’s a lack of entry level talent locally), and MAIP metrics are based on getting people placed at agencies for the internship and beyond....
Hi there!! MAIPer here. As far as I know, it’s just because of the visa situation. Also the last stage of the selection process involves the MAIP finalist getting selected by an agency, therefore my guess is there might be some worry around the finalist not getting picked if a visa process is involved. Aka if the recruiter has 4 art directors to choose from and 1 requires a visa, that may influence their decision. They’re pretty focused on making sure finalists get internships. Happy to chat more if you’re interested!
It's a lot harder to get agencies to hire them. one thought.
Do you mean DACA-type recipients residing in the US are unable to apply? Or overseas-based, temporary visitors and exchange students are unable to apply?
International students temporarily here in the United States looking for a job, and minorities living here and having grown up here already understanding the culture so that we can adequately reach diverse consumers, are two massively different things though. I’ve worked with or met hundreds of overseas hires on visas through the years, and there is no shortage of those. Whereas I think there are maybe five Black female ECDs in the entire industry. If agencies hire creatives who are non-US citizens all the time, they don’t really need the extra boost that MAIP provides.
