I’m a copywriter (surprise) who’s considering switching to strategy. Is that a terrible idea? I’ve heard of strategists switching to copywriting but don’t know if anyone who’s done the opposite.

Anyone have any sage advice?

I think strategy could use more proper writers. So I support this!

Also true ;)

Not a terrible idea. You may make slightly less in the long run, but it’s a much less stressful job and it translates to other industries pretty well if you want to leave advertising.

Yep, strategists pick up a lot of skills that are easier to quantify and understand outside the ad world. Definitely a pro of switching.

Yep. I worked with one years ago. She made it to a senior writer. But, when I met her, she was a Chief Strategy Officer. So, do you. 😉

lol Sorry, no. She went from senior copywriter, to junior strategist and on up. I met her after the switch.

Great copywriter are strategic.
Great strategists are creative.

I don’t know.

I think there are a lot of similarities. Many copywriters I have met tend to be really strategic, and really good at turning interesting ideas into inspiring language. I think it really depends on the kind of work and the kind of output that you want to spend your time on. Strategist spend their time trying to figure out the path forward, which means all the good digging into what the real business opportunity is, what’s going on in the consumer, the journey or other moments of reciptivity, etc. If you like that kind of digging (and are able to do it) and problem solving and can stand to lose much of the creative articulation work, it might be your jam.

This is great advice, thank you.

I think what initially prompted this idea was the realization that I enjoy coming up with concepts more than I enjoy scripting them out. Then I started to think about what the career trajectory for a strategist might look like versus that of a copywriter, and as far as I can tell it seems far more versatile + sustainable.

Sadly, creative teams at most agencies are fairly separated from the businesses they work for, and don’t know whether the ads they’re making actually perform well. That’s always bothered me. So maybe a switch to strategy could scratch that itch…

Do it!

I know a few people who have made this move, so this is possible. My advice would be not to make a hasty move, study up on strategy and then move.

Not a bad idea at all, you'll bring a lot of strengths strategists sometimes lack

like

Not terrible at all!

And, if you’re less interested in advertising side of things, there’s also lots of strategy/ writing/hybrid stuff to be done on the brand side of things where both skills come in handy. TOV, verbal identity, brand development, true brand strategy, etc. Could be a good way to bridge to strategy.

How many times would you your boss/managing attorney scream/berate you (not just frustration) before you quit? Stop shaming people for leaving on time. Working overtime every nite benefits no one if you’re exhausted. It’s not a badge of honor either. Work on your time management skills.

Transitioning from full time agency life to be a freelancer and/or part timer. How have folks negotiated their rate, hourly vs day? For reference, I’m in the Account/Project Management space and have 8+ years of experience. And I’d ideally like the rate to result in more $$ than what I was making when salaried. Thanks!
