I’m a director and have been all but assured I’ll be partner in 2 years. But, I’m burned out. I’m bored with the work, but at the same time very good at it. I think after 10 years it seems normal to want to do something else, but as a typical accountant I’m afraid of the unknown. I have an offer for 50% more than I make and excellent WLB. But I feel like I have golden handcuffs with partner on the horizon.

I always say, if you feel like partner is the light at the end of a tunnel, I got news for you. The partner track is another tunnel, with retirement being a light at the end of that. If you’re unhappy and feel burnt out now, the golden handcuffs will feel even more burdensome. It’s a personal choice, but it sounds like you’re ok with “less money than partner” but the freedom of actual free time for yourself/family.

And this right here is the exact same reason I left recently.
@OP a fellow “good at what I do but burnt out” SM here who was promised partner in 2 years.
The closer I got to the target, the more I realized that it’s just the start of another tunnel and the “lifestyle” isn’t what it used to be when we joined the profession.
Partners now are in a constant sale mode with a lot of pressure to “do more and more” resulting in a LOT more stress and questionable WLB.
All in all, family and health was a higher priority for me than the “big dollars” partnership brings.

Bored with the work but very good at it - you are me before I quit lol

If COVID had taught me anything, it is that life is way too short to be bored and burned out. So I left and I’m much happier now at a new area

Shooting the Hallmark/Netflix Christmas movie…?

I bailed while deep in the partner pipeline. I genuinely didn’t want to be a partner though. Absolutely no regrets.

Ask yourself how you will feel when your peers announce their partner promotion. Jealous? Maybe you should stay. Happy for them but don’t want to be them? Time to go.

SM 1 is on target. Once you make partner you are low person on the totem pole and have to constantly prove yourself even more. If you dont last at least 10 years, it's not worthwhile.

likesmarthelpful

Damn, you will make partner in 12 years? That’s really fast

Are you already in the pipeline? If not, don’t believe 100% on the 2year track to partner. Even if you’re already in the pipeline there is no guarantee. The offer sounds really good with 50% more and good wlb. If you care about wlb you should consider it

There is life outside public accounting. You can do fun and challenging work *and* have good work life balance. The people who tell you otherwise are generally
1. Motivated to make you stay, and/or
2. Have never actually worked outside public, so have no real idea what life is like in a good corporate environment.

Two questions:

1. What do you mean when you say that you are all but assured of being partner?

2. What do you think being partner will really be like?

Have you sought any advice on these questions (from anyone outside your firm)?
