Were employees laid off from BASES?
“I wish I stayed longer” says no one after they change jobs
It's not ideal. Why so soon?
I would say yes it’s too soon. Unless you are being forced out or laid off, I recommend that you stay at least 12 months.
I’m in Canada, and I’d say almost everyone I knew from law school changed jobs within their first year. I tried to stay in my job for the reasons others posted above (consistency, 12 months looks better) and I regret it. Feels like I’m stuck here now.
Realistically, it’ll take you a few months to actually find and start a new job (even without the pandemic recession), so try to think about your search as a parallel track. Keep developing skills where you are now and work the best you can.

I tried to lateral at the one year mark. I was at a satellite office of a biglaw firm. Satellite was doing well but firm (~100 in Amlaw) was struggling. It took me a few months to find a job and lots of recruiters said that looking to leave early made me look radioactive. (I have a very strong resume.) I would wait until Sept at earliest. Realistically, my jobsearch picked up in the new year, during lateral season.
I would be wary of the signalling effect of trying to leave too early.

Exactly what it sounds like. Most firms pay bonuses in Jan Feb, and people lateral after they are paid.
What is the reason for the change? If the job is something you feel you can't do then you should think about leaving, but if you're leaving to do the same type of law you might want to stick it out for a little bit and have a discussion with a colleague you're close to about how their first year was. It's not impossible to leave right now, but the current market it is rough for first year associates.
