I’m a first-year corporate associate planning on leaving in Sept. for a 2-year MBA. The idea when I first registered for the MBA was obviously to move away from BigLaw, but I’m not opposed to coming back to the firm.

How do I go about breaking the news that I’m leaving in a way that doesn’t burn bridges or make partners upset? I’m still a few months out so idk if it makes sense to tell them now. But I also already know for certain that I’m leaving, so I’m worried that sitting on it is worse.

If you’re leaving to get your MBA, you are hopefully solidly convinced that law is not for you, in which case I wouldn’t worry so much about burning bridges. Just let people know you have decided to leave to pursue your MBA. The standard two weeks notice is sufficient.

like

Agree, I’d give 2 weeks notice. If they’re upset that you’ve known for months, you could say you’d only recently made up your mind for certain. I wouldn’t tell them months out. I don’t see how that could help you (would likely hurt), and you should act in your best interest—they will.

Career advice please. I'm in my 20's work for a company that just went public, I'll receive a few thousand in shares for my time there. I have good pto and insurance is paid for. There is room for growth, so no real stall in my career. However I have a job offer for a contract with a crypto company for double what I make. It's a year contract and I use the company's product on my own time all the time. I am also heavily invested in the crypto space, philosophically monetarily, and time wise.

Should I jump to another firm?

Current firm at SC level - 105k base, typically 10% bonus. Great WLB at the moment as I'm staffed on a very lax project that will run through 2022. Enjoy working with my team, no complaints.

Another firm I'm entertaining for an SC role - 5k sign on, 130k base. They're ramping up their practice so are looking for people with my specific skillset. Have heard good things about their culture but I take word of mouth with a grain of salt.

Salary bump worth the jump?
