I’m a first year. My second year associate keeps assigning me and a summer associate full days’ work on the weekend and Friday nights without the instruction of the seniors and partner. I find it unacceptable since the timeline and instruction is completely arbitrary. What should I do here?

Weird for a 2nd year to assign work. I would just send him a response saying “I can have this by Tuesday” or “I can get started on this on Monday”

like

Not that weird. At both firms I’ve worked at it has been expected and common that you manage and can delegate to anyone junior, even by only a year.

But yea, you should feel more comfortable with pushing back on deadlines invented by someone just a year ahead of you.

like

Key question, have you approached it informally? (I.e. spoken with the second year along the lines of, “happy to get this done, is there any reason for the tight deadline here? Looks like this can wait until xxx, but I might be missing something.”)

like

A second year’s preferences are not sufficient reason for you to be doing unnecessary rush assignments over the weekend. I agree with the comment that you should more assertively push back with a reasonable timeframe for completion.

like

Sounds like they are cascading work they were asked to do… odd for a second year to assign work. In this case it’s Probly ok to just jump rank and ask the senior associate or partner they report to after talking with them directly as noted above. Normally I’d not suggest doing this but.. second year..

like

The second year needs to get some necessary feedback for their growth into a supervisor/manager here. The firm doesn’t want them burning out the first years—certainly not unnecessarily.

like

I’m a second year. On the few deals I’ve had a first year or summer doing work for me/with me, I’ve never given them arbitrary deadlines. It’s stupid for anyone to do but especially when you’re so junior. I would say that it’s best to go to the second year directly first. You don’t know what the senior or partner has told them in terms of how to assign work. I’ve been on deals where I was specifically told to have the first year do the work and then review. It would look bad on the first years part to go over my head and complain to the senior or partner. You and the second year are on really similar levels-just go to them directly before going over them.

like

If it is coming from a second year they are higher up. The fact that you think things need to come from a partner is an issue. Mid levels quarterback deals. They almost certainly have more visibility into deal timing and the schedules of the partner/senior than you.

like

I work with first years pretty often as a second year. Are you sure it’s without partner/senior instruction? A lot of times I meet separately with those folks and they ask me to assign the work.

like

I’m very curious by people saying it’s unusual for a second year to assign work. That’s not the case in my group

like

Agreed I don’t want OP to rely on people saying screw that a second year shouldn’t be assigning work. In my group if a second and first year are on a deal the second year is considered the mid level and expected to manage the first year. I think this may just be firm dependent

like

Maybe different at other firms but our recruiting committee would be pissed a summer was getting weekend work without a really good reason. Generally would require partner getting sign off before giving multiple weekends of work. Is there a summer work coordinator you could go to if you don’t want to elevate to partner level? I’ve served in that role before and would have gladly called a 2nd year out on giving summers weekend work and told him to chill tf out on first years as a thanks for you letting me know it was happening to the summer.

like

Depends on the team. I’m a second year and am expected to manage first years and assign them work on our deals. Then again, I’m transactional and we lost more than half of our mid-levels over the last year, so now second years are expected to take on the role of a fourth year out of necessity. I would talk to them about it, they may just be underwater and not thinking straight.

like

Screw that. Push back.

like

Also how do you know that the timeline is completely arbitrary? Are you super familiar with the client/type of deal?

Are you actually sure it can be handled Monday? Maybe the second year has a deal pricing or closing on Tuesday and they know if you do the work Monday they won’t have the capacity to review. If they are a second year it also needs to be reviewed by the senior and then maybe the partner. I would sometimes assign weekend work based on my ability to review. As you get more senior you have more control of deadlines. Unless you think they are being spiteful by guess is they have a reason to assign it. You may disagree with that reason, but as a first year that’s just how the cookie crumbles.

0% chance I would do this, unless there’s something more to the story

How do people focus in the office? I'm a first year and I've been mostly wfh since I started and I'm super productive at home - my setup is comfortable, I rarely get interrupted, and I feel like I can stay really focused in my home office.

Our SAs started today, so the firm is making us come in more often. My office set up is so awkward, screens are too small, and I'm constantly getting interrupted. Not to mention the extra time it took to get ready and commute. How do people do this?
