I’m a first year - partner gave shitty instructions (objectively) to a time-sensitive drafting project. They’ve been on vacation. I’ve been drowning lately, so I wake up super early to finish the draft and send it in around noon. Partner wanted it by 3 pm today, but doesn’t look at it until 5:30. Realizes I didn’t do what he wanted - which he never told me - and wants a redraft in an hour. How’s your Friday going?

The best way to avoid these situations is to send a confirming email about the assignment - if provides you with a small measure of cya and it allows the partner to reframe the instructions

Sadly some are just crappy at delegating. The suggestions above looked good and are probably better than a phone call. Remember the other side of the equation has sometimes difficult constituencies they are dealing with as well. You will go from working for a partner that is a pain to clients with no filter in between. This will happen throughout your career. Breathe deep and relax. 😀

I have been giving a few interviews lately and every Company is asking me to confirm if i can get my NP reduced from 90 Days to 45 or 60 Days. I'm still under probation but assigned to a Project already. Should I ask my Account Manager and HR about it or its unethical to do so. Am i making a mistake to ask and confirm about NP even before my offer letter or its ok to just enquire what's the process and possibility to reduce NP as we have buyout option too.

How much should I charge a friend to watch 4 dogs at their home over Christmas weekend (2 nights)? The dogs don't have any special needs or medications. I've dog sat for other people in the past but always for free. I also have had dogs of my own for most of my life. I want to start charging people for my services but also want to be reasonable since this is a friend and don't plan to charge a holiday fee. We live in St. Louis. Would $40 per day/night be reasonable?

Mid-level here. Has anyone gotten their firm to approve their doing work at a deep discount and, if so, what strategies did you use? A potential client approached me directly about a small matter (~20 to 30 hr amicus brief). The potential client (gov’t) pays a standard rate ~40% lower than mine, but I want to take on the project because it would be a good professional opportunity (e.g., high profile case & client) and of course the lower rate won’t affect my comp directly. 🤷‍♀️ All advice welcome!

I’ve been leading a massive project by myself for the last year almost and my boss torpedoed my last round of meetings: “oh we don’t need to socialize this, I’ve been doing it, let’s just kick it off.” Okay. So turns out, no one fucking knew and now because we had one meeting instead of two, the people we met with aren’t even the ones doing the work, and they’re not telling the ones who are supposed to do the work about it. So I now need to go back and do more meetings.

Is it legal to dock pay, bonuses and/or origination payouts if billable time isn’t entered on time? Firm is threatening a 3 strike rule. Just seems off if you work for the money (it’s calculated based on rates/hours/business brought in) that they could threaten you this way. Firing? I understand that.
