It comes with time!
I think it’s normal. Each client will have a different way of doing things (and they WILL be wrong).
As a staff you’re part of a team. Things will start making sense over time - it’s organic way of learning.
To accelerate the process though there is no better way than to ask questions and ask more questions. You won’t always understand everything right away (in fact often times people will give BS explanations pretending to know what they’re talking about) but it will get easier.
Talk to your seniors, to your managers, to other staff and people who worked on the client in PY.
Maybe switching to industry will help you gain a more specialized/detailed knowledge of accounting. Maybe it won’t. Take other people’s advice with a grain of salt (especially people in big 4). If they just dismiss your idea without asking why you’re even exploring this option, they’re not worth listening to.
Your first 2 years going be a big learning curve. You got this!
It takes time! My first couple years were difficult for those reasons, too. You get the hang of it once you see it enough. Give it a few years, and you'll chuckle at all the things you found to be difficult at the time.
Are you sure it’s a you don’t understand issue? It’s probably you just need to figure out and identify why clients do stuff in such a messy fashion and why things are done X way even when that’s the wrong way to do it.
