Do they have more years of relevant experience? Some firms only credit your years worked if your experience was 100% in that firm’s practice area. I was told I would be docked a class year because my first year at my first firm, I spent my year between two practice areas.
This 👆🏻 isn’t always about how many years in the career, but what you spend doing in them. Theirs was probably more directly connected to the firm’s so they are able to justify a higher billing rate to clients for their work

An associate's protest is one thing (begs the question "why the protest"). Outright refusal--yes, unless what is being asked is illegal or unethical.
However, I don’t believe in “protest”. The associate always owes the partner a discussion and justification.
Associate 1 is right. Same year doesn't mean same salary or rate. It's about relative experience in the relevant practice area and with the firms clients. You've only been there two months.
True NP1. Does firm do raises in January regardless of when you started in the prior year? Could be that.
They started before you and got a raise? Why not ask them
Firms often believe that a years experience with someone else and not worth the same as a year with them. Besides, they offered you a salary and you accepted. Over time assuming you do quality work which demands a higher hourly rate, you should catch up.
In order to command higher compensation, a lawyer has to make more money for the firm. A lawyer's income doesn't just automatically increase on an annual basis. It's all about the profit margin.
