Consultant with 5 years industry experience here, they love my note taking skills so that all I've been doing for the past week of workshops, getting pulled out of requirements gathering meetings to take notes for other people. FML.

like

Umm K2, the notes come by scrambled or the OP wouldn't be listening and capturing good notes if she or he is trying to organize content. She or he then had to spend time organizing notes to be coherent implying wasted time and money. An organized agenda has flow and things organized within seconds

like

K1 - I wouldn't mind it so much except for the fact that later on in the project the client won't respect me as much because they've set me up as only a note taker

like

Hmm yeah that's a tight spot may be trying putting an opinion based on your notes and see the feedback and continue to build? You don't wanna get pigeonholed without even trying ?

like

@K2 Often times they get on a call and spend the first 10 minutes trying to decide if they have anything to talk about. After discussing their kids soccer results and talking shit about people they work with, the meeting will get started. The client will jump around in topics until someone has to go put their dog outside because it won't stop barking. During this time the weather and local news will be discussed. The meeting will start back up and we will rediscuss everything we previously talked about. The meeting will come to a natural point to conclude, but someone will need to start talking about something irrelevant like their upcoming vacation. Mixed into those irrelevant discussions, people will finally speak up and address concerns that should have been brought up during the meeting. TL;DR - You probably got bored and confused just reading my monologue...now imagine having to take notes on that shit show 9 times a week. It becomes pretty hard to pay attention to it after a while...

like

In some cases meeting minutes are more important than you think. They can hold up in court

like

Or can't they give you a promotion and label you master or master specialist or executive specialist and then you hide note taker somewhere

D1- ain't it the truth

I fail to see how having an agenda or lack there of affects your ability to take adequate notes.

@K1 I get that it may be more time consuming but that's not an excuse for doing a crappy job! Sure I would love my clients to send agendas for every meeting, but this is the real world.

Simple: A1 suggest an agenda going forward . Start high level and slowly progress to a structures format -- show process improvement and logical thinking. I had to start forcing an agenda when I was a Workstream lead in a big gig and it worked like a charm - she changed and things were actually@more efficient and more progress instantly

People complain a lot. Note taking is a skill everyone should have.

I know fuck that like why are we so high paid and educated to do what a responsible 9th grader does?!

Note-taking will never change, regardless of your level. @K1 is exactly right. The client is paying for a consultant to come in a do the work because they want to be consulted. That goes beyond strategic conversations - even consulting them on the simplest things like how to run meetings is value add for everyone. @K2 is also right. The client's incompetence is no excuse not to perform. If that were true, we wouldn't have a job. Again, the client is paying for a consultant because they don't possess the capability or capacity to do it themselves. Doesn't matter how trivial is seems to you. Also, if you have gotten feedback that your note taking skills suck, you should be asking how you can improve to meet expectations.

I basically break my notes down as follows: Requirements/Decisions/Follow Up/Change Impact/General Notes. The general notes are just things I jot down so my mind doesn't start drifting. No one reads past the Follow Up section. Also, use One Note. Helps pull in meeting info like attendees etc. I'm basically being paid 6 figures to take notes. 😒

I just discovered one note! It's fucking amazing!

I am going into my second year practicing law. I am at a small litigation firm (I would prefer not to give my location but will say that I am not in a big market). I am curious as to what the norm is re: billable hours. My firm only gives credit for hours actually billed to the client. This seems wrong? If a partner cuts my time… or the client refuses to may for some of my time (even if I DID THE WORK)… that time doesn’t count towards my total billable hours.

Except the current Supply Chain environment means the amount of past dues are racking up and the production schedule keeps falling wildly behind and catching up because impossible because the schedule is packed at capacity. I have some ideas to help them, but I would love to find some good reading on MTO best practices and scheduling.
